Most people live in the moment and don't look ahead. Living in the moment is only looking around and showing your reactions to the events and happenings around you. When you look ahead as a child ( very few children have that capacity to see ahead of their time) you can see your youth, adulthood and your ageing and then the golden years. if you have this capacity to look ahead you may have a disciplined life where you will be able to take care of future to come. Looking back is like looking back in the past and you don't need eyes to see that your mind does the job. When you become a parent you are looking forward to a pleasant time that family can spend together so you start planning a life where everybody should be involved, you plan a family house, you get involved in the moment and do all the things that are momentary but seem very important to build a future. You are only looking forward and not looking ahead. Only time will tell whether your decision of looking forward was correct or not. When you grow old and realize that your looking forward was just a dream for which you spent your life savings and family is scattered or not bothered for you, you may regrette and contemplate that you should have looked ahead instead of looking forward.
