The year 2014
The year began with very good note for me. Lohri was celebrated with all children and it was Jai's my grandson's first Lohri. Amber my grand daughter loves village life and she wanted to celebrate it in Punjab. January was cold but Amber enjoyed the farm life with running around and playing with Grandpa's puppies. This was also year to make many decisions - I started writing again, daughter decided to get married and husband stopped farming. All are happy. My father passed away just before Lal's wedding and made us very sad as lal wanted him to see her as bride. Death is inevitable but noble people only leave their bodies and their good souls always remain with us as good wishes.
The ugly event in Peshawar spoilt the otherwise good year that had no major tragedies reported. Pakistan's children are paying the price for Pakistan's evil designs. Pakistan is writing history with satanic verses. Where is God? why he didn't save the innocent lives?
15 more days for the year to wind up and I hope all goes well as the year will end up with Happy note and lot of celebration at home. My 40th wedding anniversary and Lal is getting married on the 30th December. I am so happy that my long time friends are coming all the way from Germany for the marriage. jai and Amber will add to all the fun.
Join me friends with all your good wishes in my happiest moments.
I love you all and help me spread the love to all humanity.Repeat the Sikh prayer with me and say Sarbat da bhala- wishing goodness for the whole humanity.

Massacre
The massacre of innocent children in Pakistan is the most barbaric act of violence that can be termed Ungodly, UN-Islamic and inhuman. It is time that Pakistan start teaching the True Islam in their Madras as and not the Taliban version of Islam.
RIP all the departed innocent souls.

Sukhmani Sahib 43
Ashtapadi 18 continues: Tongue is one but manifold are His
praises because He is Perfect Person in Himself with all the qualities, the
Lord is inaccessible, incomprehensible and immaculate and none of the human
sense organs can reach Him and he has no need of food (offerings made to Him
with food and eatable of His choice through Pundit is all waste, for Him all
are equal), He has no enmity and can comfort anyone. It is just impossible to
match with Him with all these qualities and we can never evaluate His True
worth. Many devotees ever make obeisance bowing to His lotus feet they meditate
on His Name. Nanak is ever devoted to the True Guru by whose grace one can
meditate on Lord’s Name (pad 5).
Rare people have the fortune to obtain the ambrosial Nectar
of His Name and the one who quaffs on it becomes immortal. That person never
perishes in whose mind the treasure of values get manifested. He can take the
instructions from True Guru and gives these further to His servants. Such a
person never gets influenced by worldly love and illusions he has only One Lord
in his mind. In pitch darkness the Name of Lord shines like a lamp O Nanak all
the darkness of superstitions, worldly illusions and pain vanish with His
enlightenment (pad 6).
O brother! The instructions of the Perfect Saint are like
coolness in the midst of heat, happiness chasing away the pain, the fear of
birth and death is removed. When the fear is gone the life becomes fearless for
mortal, the evil is destroyed and with that vanishes from mind. All, to whom He
has shown mercy, belong to Him and in the company of Saints the Name of God,
the enemy of pride is repeated. By repeatedly listening to the Name of Lord O
Nanak, doubt and wandering of the mind is chased away and stability takes place
(pad 7).
“Nirgun and Sargun are two characteristics that are endorsed
for Almighty in Sikh philosophy. One wonders how two opposing qualities are
attributed to the Almighty? The explanation for this comes from Guru Nanak’s
concept of God and according to him the origin of the world or universe has
taken place when the visible attributed qualities of the Lord manifested and
the Creation of Lord can be seen, felt and absorbed by all five organs. Before
this Creation the Almighty Lord was there but all the attributed qualities were
not manifested so Guruji call Him Nirgun. Even in His Sargun form Almighty
cannot be compared with anybody visible with form and shape because His
manifestation is only in His Creation.”
He himself is Nirgun and Sargun and by showing all His
miracles of Creation He has amazed the whole world and has created the whole
drama. He alone knows His worth. There is none other like Him. He is continuously
within everything and like warp and woof He is contained in everything and this
enlightenment comes in the company of Saints. Having created His Creation He
has infused all His power in it and Nanak is ever ready to sacrifice himself to this Powerful Lord (pad 8).

God is forever there and by reciting on His Name we get
enlightenment to be in His presence (Ashtapadi 18).
Shlok: He who has realized the True Lord, is called True
Guru. Sing the praises O Nanak because with his association His disciple gets
emancipated.
Ashtapadi 18 begins: The True Guru is ever protecting his
disciple and he is always merciful towards him. Guru washes off the filth of
evil thoughts from the mind of his disciple and he starts repeating the Name of
God. All the bondages are removed once the disciple comes in to the sanctuary
of the True Guru and he stops all evil deeds. The True Guru gives the wealth of
God’s Name to his disciple. The True Guru makes not only this life but the next
one as well worth for his disciple. The True Guru is the slave of the God and
Nanak ever worships him and remains in His feet (pad 1).
The one who has come to live in the house of the True Guru
loves to obey the command of the Guru and doesn’t like to show his own
importance (remember the humble personality of Bhai Lehna ji who came to live
with Guru Nanak ji at Kartarpur and was accepted by Guru Nanak to carry forward
the House of Nanak or thought of Nanak ji and thus became Guru Angad the second
Master). In his mind he shall ever meditate on His (Lord’s) Name and sell off
his soul to the Guru and such a slave of Guru is taken care of by the Guru
himself and all his affairs are set. He obtains the Lord because he pleases Him
by giving the service. He absorbs all the instruction given by the Guru and
thus gets all the grace of Guru showered on self O Nanak (pad 2).
The God’s servant who makes his Guru fully sure of his
devotion has actually understood the concept of Supreme Being. Because a True
Guru has only one God in his heart and I sacrifice myself again and again to
such a Guru because he is the treasure of everything and he is provider of new
lease of life to mankind all remain absorbed in His Transcendent Name all eight
watches of the day. The Saint abides in the Lord and the Lord abides in his
Saints. One may become very clever and overly smart and search thousands of
ways to find Him (God). Nanak says only by great fortune such Guru is obtained
(pad 3). (I strongly believe this pad has been written for Guru Nanak ji by the
fifth Master).
A man’s life is complete and purified if he gets a sight of
the True Guru and his life gets blot-less if he gets the chance to touch his
feet. In the company of a True Guru and singing His praises one can reach the
court of the Supreme Being. On hearing the words of Guru the ears get sated, the
mind gets contentment and the soul is won over. Perfect is the Guru and
eternally true are his instructions. His ambrosial glance is enough to make a
Saint out of Simple person. Infinite are his virtues and their worth cannot be measured.
Nanak says whoever pleases Him so much He unites him to self (pad 4).

Ashtapadi 17 continues: If God infuses might in a tiny ant it
can reduce an army of millions of men to ashes but when He wishes to preserve
someone whom He likes, He does not take his breath away. Man makes many efforts
of many kinds (to prolong life) but it goes all in vain because none can
preserve or kill (but God). He is the protector of all beings (on this earth). Why
do you have such anxiety O mortal being? Nanak says meditate only on the Name
of this Wonderful Lord (pad 5).
Again and again recite on Lord’s Name that is like drinking
nectar that make soul and body both sated. The jewel of Lord’s Name is awarded
to the Gurmukh (God oriented) and he gets so engrossed that he cannot see
anything other than the One Lord. The name is his wealth, his beauty and
delight. The name is his comfort and companion. The persons satiated with the nectar
of the Name are merged with body and soul into the Name alone. O Nanak such
persons become His slaves and they are reciting His Name whilst seated, standing
and sleeping (pad 6).
Uttering His Name day
and night is the blessing, a gift that Lord has bestowed on His devotee. He
performs devotional service with heartfelt yearning to remain absorbed in His
Name. He comes to know of his past (his birth or origin) and his present to recognize
the Will of Lord. Who can narrate His praises? I know not how to describe Him
not even one of His excellences. Nanak says all those who can remain in His
presence at all hours of the day are perfect (pad 7).
O my soul you seek the protection, and give your body and
soul to those who have recognized the Lord and have become donor of His gifts.
In their sanctuary you shall find the solace and all the sins will vanish in
their presence. You shall renounce all your cleverness and attach yourself to
the service of those slaves who will emancipate you from the coming and going (cycle
of rebirth). O Nanak, worship at the feet of such beings of the Lord (pad 8).

The Lord God is indestructible (Ashtapadi 17)
Shlok: True in the prime, True from the beginning of ages,
True He is even now and He will be eternally True O Nanak.
Ashtapadi 17 begins; true are the Lords feet and true are
those who touch them. True is His sight and true is our seeking Him. True is
His Name and true is who meditate on His Name. He (God) is true Himself and
true is all that he sustains. He is Himself goodness and goodness He bestows
upon others. True is His word and true is the one who utters that word. True
are those ears that hear the praises of the True Lord. The one who understands
the True Lord all is Truth O Nanak True, True is the Lord (Pad 1).
He, who has accepted in his heart that the Lord is embodiment
of Truth recognizes that God is the root cause of all that is caused in this
world. He, who has the faith for one supreme God in his mind, has the divine
knowledge revealed to him. (A mortal) Abandoning all fear he, who has
fearlessly absorbed in Him from whom he has sprung like a blend of a thing of
same kind (Water for example) that cannot be separated. Only a person who has
sharp discerning understanding to know him O Nanak can meet the Omnipresent
Lord (pad 2).
Lord’s slave is ever
obedient to Him as he adores Him, his faith is imbibed in his mind and his way
of life becomes pure as he knows that the God is always with him and the love
grows more and more for the Lord. And then the Lord becomes his care taker, his
cherisher and the Formless Lord preserves the honour of His slave. He is the
Lord’s servant whom He shows his mercy, Nanak, that slave remembers the Lord
with every breath (pad 3).
The Lord screens all shortcomings of His devotees and doesn't allows his honour to be maligned instead he gives Him glory and makes him
remember His Name. He maintains the honour of His devotees and no one knows to
what extent He can go in doing that because no one can compete with Lord’s
devotee as they becomes highest of high. Nanak, when the Lord has taken someone
as His slave he becomes known in all ten directions (pad 4).

Destinies can be written
My father, known as Sardarji Doctor here in Pune was born to very humble
parents of village ‘Lalian Kalan” in district Jullandhar of Punjab. After
struggling hard for survival with meager agricultural land and tibbas (sand
dunes) overpowering the agricultural activities the family decided to take
advantage of the scheme floated by the colonial Power to recruit soldiers from
Punjab and the scheme was to give agriculture land as reward to a family that
would send three sons to the army for fighting in the world war II. So my
father joined army and had the distinction of serving in famous Punjab Regiment.
A thin, meek and shy boy of Lalian kalan who was just forth standard pass in
Urdu medium was taught the hardships of life in war front and he was in signals
and had to be there in front before others joined. Along with others he
traversed the whole of middle east, North Africa, central Africa and then right
up to Italy where just 14 Km before Rome he was badly injured with Bomb shrapnel
all over his body. He was sent back to India and landed in Karachi Military
hospital where he was operated upon 13 times. After that arduous life almost in
isolation from family he was sent to Pune- Khadki for recuperation as the
British had decided to divide India and Karachi was going to be part of
Pakistan. That was year 1946. In Karachi Military hospital he was sent to
morgue once as he was declared dead by British Doctors, three days later the
morgue attendant heard his mourns and he was taken back to critical care and
given treatment. Perhaps it was God’s gift of second lease of life. My father
had learned a lot from the Granthi ji of his unit who not only taught Gurmukhi
and Hindi but recitation of Gurbani and kirtan to him. After recuperating in
Khadki MH he joined central govt.’s job
in Pune as electrician but somewhere in back of his mind was the thought of
doing sewa and show his gratitude to the Almighty Lord for giving him second
life. He asked for a space from the Army officers for making a Gurudwara in
Khadki and was granted a small place. He made his Gurudwara and every Sunday paid
his tributes to the Lord by singing Kirtan. He was so shy but when he was doing
Kirtan he was absorbed may be united with Lord and forgot the world around him.
Something was urging him to do more and more and he joined a correspondence
course for homoeopathy. He learned everything so thoroughly that he passed his
exams of medical Council easily and became a registered medical practitioner in
one go.
And the destinies are either written or made but I think in his case it
was both because he became so famous as doctor that all MBBS and MD doctors of
the area came to see his practice where he daily gave medicines to 300 -400
patients. Sometimes people came with flowers and coconuts just like they do
offerings in Temples. Soldiers would ask permission to go and take medicine
from Sardarji Doctor so the CO of Military hospital once asked me if he does
some magic. He lived the life of a Gurmukh, did sewa, did free distribution of
medicines to the needy, his words were like Saints because many people said we
get 50% relief from his speech and the other 50% from his very simple
medicines.
On his Antim Ardas on 9th December 2014 in MH Khadki
Gurudwara in Pune please join this daughter to pay tribute to this noble soul
and a true Sikh of Guru Nanak.

The (God’s) Name sustains all creatures in this world, by His
name the regions (continents) and the universe are sustained, the Vedas,
puranas and smiritis are all sustained by His Name, by His name the knowledge
and meditation are sustained, by His name the skies and the under worlds get
their support, all the formations in this world are supported by His Name, by
the support of His name all mansions (Bhavan – it is believed that there are
three mansions to complete the universe and they are Skies (all spheres), earth
and under earth world or Patal) are sustained. Men are emancipated by
associating with the Name and hearing it with their ears. O Nanak, the merciful
Lord when decides to merge the mortals into His Name the fourth stage (fourth
stage of human life is believed to be of eternal bliss when a mortal is totally
merged into Lord) of human life is obtained (pad 5).
True is His Form and True is His seat, His Person is so true
that He alone can be Supreme (because all his features –form, seat and his
personality are true), His acts and his word speaks through all the mortals
because He is contained in all. His deeds are seen in His Creation and His
Creation is the Truth. His foundation is the ultimate Truth so all that springs
from Him is the Truth. Whatever He does is the purest of pure. Everything turns
out well for a mortal who has understood His instructions. The True Name of the
Lord gives peace and this faith Nanak has obtained from the True Guru (pad 6).
True are the words and
instructions of the Saints, true are the persons in whose hearts The Lord has
entered and all those who have understood the truth and are in love with it get
salvation by meditating on His Name. Lord Himself is the truth because all he
has made is the truth (there is no illusion about His Creation and it is not
mythology). He Himself knows his limits and extent. It is His Creation and it
belongs to Him and none can understand all His extent and none can take care of
it. None can estimate The Creator’s extent and measure O Nanak; He (God) does
what pleases Him (pad 7).
I am amazed at all the wonders he can display and all those
whom His wonders are revealed are the one who can enjoy them. All those who are
absorbed in the love of Lord obtain the bliss of His Name. They themselves
become the messenger of that love by spreading which all the pain vanishes and
the mortals swim across the worldly ocean. He who associates with the servants
of Lord is fortunate and in such a society he professes love for only one
Universal Lord. Lord’s slave sings His excellence and praises and obtains His
Grace O Nanak (pad 8).

How is that
Timeless Being (Akal Purakh)? He exists in every being still He is free of
illusions or maya (Ashtapadi 16).
Shlok: The
God has no form, no outline and no colour and He is devoid of these three
worldly qualities but still He knows whom He shall attract to understand Him
and please him. O Nanak, He causes him to understand Him (God) with whom He is
pleased.
Ashtapadi 16
begins: Keep the Imperishable Lord in your mind and renounce your love of man O
soul because He is there and beyond Him there is nothing. That one Lord is
continuously within us and He is far-seeing and all knowing. He is
Unfathomable, Profound, Deep and All -wise. He is the Transcendent, The Supreme
Being and the Master of the Universe. God is the treasure of mercy, compassion
and pardons. Nanak has a longing in his heart to fall at the feet of such a
Lord (pad 1).
He (God)
fulfils all desires and has the capacity to give protection. What the God has
inscribed with His hands will happen. In the wink of an eye he can fill and
empty (world’s making and destruction, care and protection) and no one can
fathom His deeper resolve. He is the embodiment of happiness and His mansion is
eternal bliss with all the things of the world present there. Among Kings He is
the Supreme King and amongst yogis He is the supreme yogi. Amongst ascetic He
is a great ascetic and amongst householders he is a great enjoy -er. Nanak no one
has ever found an end of Him (the Creator Person) so remain in constant
meditation like His devotees (Saints) to have the peace (pad 2).
The God’s
play and His various wonders have no limits and the entire demigod’s are tired
of their search (in searching limits to His wonders). How can a son know of His
father’s birth? The various things (in the world) are strung only on His
string. He grants the knowledge and meditation of His Name to His slaves who
have that sense O Nanak to remember His Name. All whom Lord bestows with three
qualities (form, outline and colour) is just to cause confusion and such people
come in the cycle of rebirth and coming and going (in this world). All the
places (the higher and lower ranked distinction according to the virtues
bestowed on His slave for meditating on His name and three created in qualities that cause confusion are
His doing. As God causes Nanak to know Him so does he understands Him (pad 3).
He (God) can
take up so many forms and various colours. He can come into various disguises.
He can expand Himself in myriads of ways because He is Unique and Imperishable.
In the wink of an eye He can display many plays. The perfect Lord fills all the
places and has created His Creation in so many ways. He has Himself appraised
His worth. All are His hearts and all are His places. Nanak lives on repeating
the Name of the Lord (pad 4).

Ashtapadi 15 continues: The merchandise that you have come to
earn in this world (O brother is the bliss of God’s Name because obtaining that
all the worldly bliss will be yours) is the Name of the Omnipresent Lord is available
in the house of Saints. Renounce your ego and self conceit, weigh the Name of
Lord in your mind’s scale and purchase (God’s Name) with your soul by setting
out in the company of the Saints. Abandon all other entanglements so that
everyone knows you as blessed, blessed. Your face will be illuminated in His
court so is this merchandise successful for you. Very few will have this rare
merchandise and those who do this merchandise Nanak offers his sacrifice to
them (pad 5).
Washing Saints feet and partaking that water and dedicating
your soul to the Saints, bathing with the dust of the Saints feet and sacrificing
yourself to the Saints (these are the process of humbling down by abandoning
your pride, ego and worldly love and nothing of these things matter anymore) by
serving the Saints you are blessed and fortunate. (Because) In the saints congregation
praises of Lord are sung and the Saints will save you from various dangers (from
getting stray) and he who sings God’s glory tastes the ambrosial Nectar. O
Nanak, the one who comes to seek the protection from Saints all the bliss will
come to him (pad 6).
God has that power to revive a dead, he satiates all hungry,
all the treasure are in His glance, but the man obtains what He writes in his
destiny. All that we see in this world belongs to Him the Omnipotent Lord. Neither
there has been nor is there going to be anyone like Him therefore O men
remember Him alone day and night. The most immaculate and pure is living thus.
And all those O Nanak who are blesses with this grace of meditating on His Name
will become pure (pad 7).
The one who has faith in Guru comes to meditate on the Name
of God Lord. That person comes to be known as His devotee in all three worlds
in whose mind the Unique Lord has come to reside. He (the mortal-) becomes
truthful in his ways and doings. His heart becomes truthful and whatever he
utters is truthful. His vision becomes true so does his form (one can notice
that a person is truthful because that shows in his eyes). He distributes truth
and truth he spreads. He who recognizes the Supreme Lord as True, that man O
Nanak gets merged in to the True Being (pad 8). End of Ashtapadi 15.

Shlok: The God is accomplished with all powers and He comes
to know all our problems. Nanak offers his sacrifice to such a Lord remembering
whom one gets emancipated.
Ashtapadi 15 begins: The Care Taker – Universal God mends
everything broken, he cherishes all beings, he worries for everyone, none
returns empty-handed from Him. O my soul ever meditates on such a Lord. The imperishable
Lord is all in all. Even if a mortal thinks hundreds of time to accomplish
something it cannot be done unless He Wills. Without Him nothing can be
availed. O Nanak salvation is attained by repeating His Name alone (pad 1).
Beautiful/ handsome person should avoid being proud of
his/her beauty because it is His (God’s) light that shines through a person to
make him or her beautiful. One should avoid being proud of his/her riches
because the riches are all His gifts. If one is proud of his being mighty
knight must know that obtaining that is impossible without His powers. A rich
person becomes proud of his riches and starts charity must know that He is the
great giver. The ego is like an ailment if it is cured by the grace of Guru
then alone one is totally healthy (pad 2).
As a pillar supports any building so does Lords Name supports
a soul. As a stone floats when put in a boat in water so the mortals are saved
who cling to the Lord’s feet. As a lamp gives light in the darkness so does the
soul blooms by beholding the sight of the Guru. As the man finds his way in a
great wilderness so his inner light (the knowledge and truth about God) starts
illuminating (the glow on his face) in the company of Saints. I desire and seek
the dust of the feet of these Saints. Fulfil Nanak’s desire O Lord (pad 3).
O foolish mind why do you wail? When all you get is written
in your destiny from beginning. Grief and happiness are given by God. Abandon
everything else just remember Him alone. Whatever He does, deem it good for
you. Why do you wander astray O ignorant man?
What things have come with you (at your birth in this world)?
that you O greedy moth cling to the worldly things. Dwell on His name in thy
mind O Nanak so that you go home (after death world) with all honour (pad 4).

Shaheedan nu Pranam
In Guru Granth Sahib there are 60 hymns written by Guru Teg Bahdur ji
and they are all in Brij bhasa – a language spoken in eastern parts of the
country like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. After Guru Nanak Devji major missionary
work to spread Sikhism in far off places (out of greater Punjab) was done by
Guru Teg Bahadur ji. He took up the missionary work on the trails of Guru Nanak
in UP and Bihar and went from Assam and other sister states up to now
Bangladesh. In Punjab the fear of Moghul and their tyranny had become lesser
and people were getting ready to face them. According to the new policies of
Islamization, Aurangzeb had started demolishing temples and the fear factor in
east was so strong that all the Sikhs established by Guru Nanak there started
coming to Guruji. Guru Teg Bahadur ji left for the east and spent 5 years in
infusing spirit of chardi kala in those people. That is why all his hymns are
in Brij bhasha. Guru ji was in Dacca when the news came that arbitrary
islamisation now starts by first converting Brahmins to Islam. The idea
was that if the Brahmins were converted first it will be easier to convert
other castes. This task was first started by Subedar of Kashmir. So Kashmiri
Pundit who knew about Sikh Gurus because of the missionary work and battles of
Guru Hargobind ji that only they can save us. They came to Guruji at Anandpur sahib
and asked for a solution. After contemplating on this matter Guru ji thought of
the great sacrifice of his Grandfather Guru Arjun Devji and his convictions to
remain a true Sikh of house of Nanak. So even if he was not a votary of Tilak
and janeyu he resolved to give his life to save humanity from the tyranny of
Auranzeb. It was the plight of fellow human beings that his resolve to
sacrifice his life was taken and he declared if the Emperor can convert Sikh
Guru to Islam others will follow. If he is not successful in converting the
Sikh Guru he will stop the tyrannical dictate of forcible conversions. On
hearing this declaration the Emperor ordered his arrest. Guru Teg Bahadurji was
prepared for this heroic task by his father Guru Hargobind ji. He was left
alone for meditation in Bakala at his grandmother’s house. 13 years of secluded
life for meditation and contemplation a great soul, a master was ready to take
up the heroic and supreme task that has no parallel in the history of the
world. A self sacrifice for own religion and convictions is heard of but for
the sake of humanity and plight of fellow human beings was never heard of
before. He saved Hindus from ghastly conversion dictates of the Emperor and for
that reason he is known as Hind di chadar.
On this day of his martyr’s day let us all pray for him and pay our
tributes.

Ashtapadi 14 continues: One who has the Lord God in his mind
and heart all the time is comfortable like a Saint. He who has God’s grace, he
is like a servant of the God, of whom can he have any fear? He has come to know
that God is same as He appears to him and He is the one who is accomplished and
self contained. By searching, searching and searching ultimately the mortal
have found Him and the whole reality is revealed to him by the grace of the Lord.
O Nanak when I look at Him, I found Him to be the root cause of everything, He
is in the minute and He is in the huge (pad 5).
Nothing is born and nothing dies. This is all a big play that
He has created. Coming and going from this world, visible and invisible and the
entire world is under His command. He is all by Himself and He is in
everything. He uses all his powers to produce and then destroy and Himself is
imperishable, nothing of Him is fragile. He Himself is the support of this
world. Lords glory is in-apprehensible and inscrutable. O Nanak, He Himself
makes man remember Him (pad 6).
Ones who have learned (truth about Him) have earned prestige
and glory. They can thus give instructions to the whole world and the world is
saved by these slaves of the Lord. By associating with these slaves of the Lord
all distress gets dissolved. The merciful Master unites them with Himself. By
uttering His glory they become grateful. The mortal comes to the service of these
servants because He has His Grace on the fortunate ones. They who utter His name
come to rest and peace, O Nanak they are the noble people (pad 7).
He (The slave of the Lord) has God abiding in his heart and
he does everything according to the Lord’s command and whatever happens he let
it happen naturally because he has recognized Him to be the Creator. Whatever god
Will or does is sweet to him. The Lord starts appearing in His true form to
Him. He knows that he originates from Him(Lord). He is the treasure of peace
and this honour has been given by Lord himself. Nanak knows that Lord and slave
are one (the slave has become one life with the Lord). (pad 8).

He must concentrate on the Timeless being because He is the
one who will and can fulfill all wishes and needs (Ashtapadi 14, 15)
Shlok: O good people abandon your cleverness and remember the
Lord King. Treasure the hope of One Lord in your mind and all your distress,
doubts and fear shall depart.
Ashtapadi 14 begins: Depending on man may not bring any gains
because the Illustrious Lord alone is reliable by whose gifts man remains
satiated and all thirst is quenched. He may destroy but He is the saviour too
and all this is not in hands of a man. If man understands His Will (Hukam or
order) he may feel that bliss. String His Name like necklace and wear around
your neck. Remember, remember, and remember His Name O Nanak and all your
obstacles shall be removed (pad 1).
Utter the praises of the Formless Lord in your heart O my
soul you shall practice the works of righteousness. Drink the nectar of His
Name O soul your tongue will become pure and you shall be comfortable for ever.
See the wonderful play of The Lord with your eyes, and associate with the congregation
of Saints and all other associations will disappear. Walk your way up to the
Lord of the world with your feet; contemplate on His Name for a moment O soul
your sins will be washed away. Doing all good deeds listen to the story of His
glory and your face will illuminate with a glow O Nanak (pad 2).
Fortunate are those who sing His glory forever and ever.
Those who meditate on His Name are accounted as wealthy in this world. Those
who recite His Name with soul, body and mouth are happy forever and ever. The one
who has recognized that He is One only Unique Lord has obtained the knowledge
of the world this one and the other. The one whose mind is won over by the Name
O Nanak knows the Pure One (pad 3).
The one who has understood himself by the grace of the Guru
has all his desires quenched. The man who sings His praises in the company of
the Saints becomes free of all ailments. The one who sings day and night the
praises of the Lord becomes detached from his family. The one who has pinned
his hope only on One Lord has his death noose cut away. The one who has hunger
for the Supreme Lords Name awakened O Nanak suffer no pain (pad 4).

peace. The slanderer has no place and nowhere to go. Nanak says if the Saint
wishes he can still salvage and unite the slanderer with self (pad 4).
The slanderer of Saints can never
accomplish anything and breaks down mid-way. The life of Saint’s slanderer
becomes like wandering in the wilderness as if he is thrown in the desolate
place. The Saint slanderer becomes hollow from within just like a dead body
that is without breath (he becomes devoid of all those virtues that are needed
to have a meaningful life). The slanderer of Saints has no roots (inherent
family values that bring honour and prestige) and he is responsible for that so
whatever he has been sowing that he is reaping. No one can save the slanderer
from this state O Nanak unless the Saint’s mercy is bestowed upon him to
emancipate (pad 5).

always anxious because his fate hangs between life and death that means he is
always in fear of death. The hope of the slanderer never gets fulfilled and he

The one who is blessed to recite the
name of Almighty must not slander Guru Arjun Devji has called this as Ninda.
In Sikh philosophy Guru, Sadhu,
Saint, Brahmgyani like terminologies are used for a man who is born perfect.
Apart from possessing innate perfection, his birth is seen as medium to bring
this perfection in others. He is born to make others perfect like him because
this perfectness is inherent or within every one of us. The purpose of birth of
all the above synonyms is thus to awaken the inherent capacity of so called
ordinary people to come to perfectness and lead them to have direct connection
with the Supreme Lord. Guru Nanak has denied the reincarnation of God and
declared that God can never take birth. Approaching God is thus through these
perfect men whom we call Guru, Sadhu, Saint or Brahmgyani. Guru Arjun Devji has
taken a very serious note on this matter because certain people with vested
interests try to slander these perfect persons who are trying to lead others to
achieve perfectness so that the Almighty’s Will or Hukam prevails.
Shlok: the person who seeks shelter
with Saints is saved. The person who slanders Saints, O Nanak, come into the
cycle of rebirth and is born again and again.
Ashtapadi 13 begins: By accusing Saints
a man’s life is shortened. By accusing Saints man cannot escape from the
messengers of death. By accusing Saints man falls into hell. By accusing Saints
the thoughts become impure. By accusing Saints man loses his own prestige. Dejected
by Saints man cannot find any solace. By accusing the Saints the place is
defiled. Nanak, even the slanderer is saved in the company of Saints if the
compassionate Saints show the mercy (pad 1).
By slandering the Saints the face of
man becomes distorted. By slandering Saints he crows like a raven. By
slandering Saints man comes into an existence of a snake. By slandering Saints
man comes into the existence of creepy worms. By slandering Saints man burns in
fire of desire. By slandering Saints man deceives everyone. By slandering
Saints all his glow vanishes by slandering Saints man becomes meanest of means.
There is no place of rest for slanderers. Nanak if the Saint takes mercy such a
slanderer can obtain salvation (pad 2).
The slanderer of a Saint is an evil
monger and he cannot rest for a moment. The slanderer is a great murderer (he
kills character) so he is dejected by the Lord. The slanderer of a Saint loses
his Kingdom. The slanderer falls in sorrow and distress and become poor. The slanderer
contracts all ailments. The slanderer suffers separation. Slandering a Saint is
a sin of all sins. Nanak says if it pleases a Saint the slanderer still can be
emancipated (pad 3).

Ashtapadi 12 continues: As long as
man thinks that he can do something he has no peace, when he thinks he can do
anything he wanders through wombs to complete his cycle of birth and death. As
long as he thinks he has friends and enemies his mind comes not to rest. As
long as he is possessed, with the love of riches the Lord of righteousness will
punish him. Only by God’s grace the shackles of man can be shattered. By Guru’s
grace O Nanak the ego of a man is effaced (pad 4).
Once a man has earned a thousand he
runs after hundred thousand. Running after money he is not being satisfied. Man
indulges in many evil passions of enjoyment but is not satiated so for more and
more he almost kills himself. Without contentment no one is a King. Like
objects of a dream all his efforts are in vain. Through the love of God all the
peace is gained. Only few fortunate have the fortune of this grace (of God). He
(The Lord self) is the cause of all causes, O Nanak keep reciting His name ever
and ever (pad 5).
The Creator is the prompter and doer
of all things happening. Are there any deliberations that are in the hands of
man? He does all things as per the glance He (God) casts so does man becomes.
The Master is all by Himself. He does things according to His pleasure. He
keeps a distance yet He is close by. He understands, beholds and exercises judgements.
He is one but He is many (in His manifestation). He neither dies nor perishes
and neither has He come nor does he go. Nanak, he remains diffused amongst all
(pad 6).
He (God), himself gives instructions
and himself He understands, He himself is merged with everyone and Himself He
expands, everything He does, He is the Creator, can anything happen without
Him? He is everywhere in places, inter spaces. He is the actor of His own drama,
He exhibits His plays and His pleasures are infinite. He is in the soul and
soul is in His own self. O Nanak, His worth cannot be estimated (pad 7).
True, True, True is the Lord Master.
Very few who have the grace of God can describe Him. True, True, True is the
one who has created everything. One amongst millions can know Him. Beautiful,
beautiful, beautiful is your Being O Lord. Extremely beautiful, limitless and
incomparable is your Being. Pure, Pure, Pure are your words (Bani). Everyone
who repeats and hears with his ears become Pure, Pure, Pure and blessed. With
all his love Nanak repeats your Name (pad 8).

Guru Granth Sahib
Sukhmani Sahib 30
The one who is blessed to recite His
Name and praises must take care of the following virtues; a – he must become
humble in nature (Ashtapadi 12), b – he must not slander anyone (Ashtapadi 13),
c – He must concentrate on the Timeless being because He is the one who will
and can fulfill all wishes and needs (Ashtapadi 14, 15).
Shlok: The humble person lives in
peace because he has abandoned his ego but the haughty ones are consumed by
their own pride O Nanak.
Ashtapadi 12 begins: The one who has
a pride like Kingship not only goes to the hell but behaves like a dog. He, who
is proud of his youth becomes like worm of filth, he, who calls himself man of
good deeds wanders into the cycle of coming and going in many existences, he,
who takes pride of his wealth and land is stupid, blind and ignorant, he, in
whose heart Lord mercifully plants humbleness O Nanak gets salvation here and
peace hereafter (pad 1).
The one who is proud of his riches
shall know that while going (from this world) not even a grass straw goes with.
He, who has set his hope on his army and men, shall be destroyed in a moment. The
one who deems himself strongest of all is in ashes in moments. The one, who in
is haughty pride thinks nothing of others will be disgraced by the righteous
judge (Dharam Rai). Only a person who by Guru’s grace gets his ego effaced becomes
acceptable in His (God’s) court O Nanak (pad 2).
Man may do millions of good deeds and
still is egoistic of all that he does incur only trouble because all his acts are
in vain. Man may do may penances (there are people who do different kinds of
penances like fasting, standing on one leg, living in a dug up hole only with
head out of it, reaching far away temples bare foot, standing for days in water
and many more ways of torturing your body to achieve union with Lord) but if
their pride and ego is not effaced they remain in the cycle of birth in hell or
heaven. By doing all such efforts if soul is not softened, how can one reach
the God’s court? He, who calls himself
good (by making charities, and other deeds of goodness for show) goodness does
not draw near him. Nanak only who humbles down so much that he feels like dust
of everybody’s feet is rendered pure in mind (pad 3).

Ashtapadi 11 continues: In an instant He (God)
can make a humble creepy creature like person to be a King, The Transcendent
Lord is the saviour of the poor because if one does not have any qualities in an
instant He can make him famous in all ten directions. In His generosity God
does not keep any account of deeds (karmas) of a person whom He bestows His
Grace. Soul and body are all His capital and he illuminates every heart with
His divine light. He is the greatest and that status He has created Himself.
Nanak lives by beholding His greatness (pad 4).
The mortal does not have power in his
hand; the cause of all causes is in the hands of the Lord of Universe. The poor
helpless mortal is only under His command. So whatever pleases Him (GOD), He
will let it happen. He reveals Himself in higher and sometimes in lower beings.
He grieves and then laughs with enjoyment. Sometime slander and worry are His
occupation. Sometimes He sits higher in the heavenly sky and sometimes comes
down to be under earth. Sometimes He becomes a knowledgeable person and deliberate on Himself. Nanak He, Himself unites with man (pad 5).
Sometimes man dances in various ways,
sometimes he remains asleep day and night, sometimes he becomes terrible in his
wrath, sometimes he becomes dust of all men’s feet, sometimes he sits as a
great King and sometimes sit as a poor beggar, sometimes he comes into a mood
of crime, sometimes he is known as extremely good. All this happens with man
because it is The Lord who keeps him so. By the grace of Lord O Nanak this is
truth (pad 6).
Sometimes he delivers lectures as a scholar
(pundit), sometimes he becomes an ascetic and vows to keep silent but
contemplates, sometimes he bathes at pilgrim places, sometimes he becomes an
adept and delivers sermons and as adept he transforms into an insect, an
elephant or a moth and continuously wanders into many life forms and guises
into various disguises. It is all God’s
pleasure that he makes him dance so as it pleases Him (God) so it happens.
Nanak, there is none other like Him (pad 7). (Sidh or adept are performers of
miracles and can turn themselves in to any form and size).
Sometimes man come into the company
of Saints and never ever wants to leave their place. In their company knowledge
and enlightenment illuminate his mind. That abode is imperishable. His soul,
body and mind get tinged with the love of the Only One Lord. He ever abides
with the Supreme Lord as water becomes water when mixed, and light blends with
the Supreme Light. His coming and going into human form stops (he achieves
Moksha). Nanak is ever ready for sacrifice for such a Lord (pad 8).

Shlok: The Lord alone is the Creator Person and there is none like Him. The expanse of His Creation is everywhere in water, on land and in the skies. Nanak offers his sacrifice to such a Lord.
Ashtapadi 11 begins: He (God) does and prompts others who are capable to do things, everything. Whatever pleases Him that alone happens in this world, in a second he creates and in a second he can destroy. He has no end or limits. Under His Will the earth can stay without support (according to Hindu belief the earth is held on the horns of a Bull but Sikh doctrine believes that it is His Hukam or Will that earth has no support), the creation is under His Will and it is created and merged as He wills. There are persons who believe in higher values and others who have faith in lower values and they work accordingly but under His Will. All the play of various colours and types are fashioned according to His Will. Having created His Creation he beholds His greatness with self admiration. O Nanak the Lord is contained in all things (pad 1).
If it pleases Him the man gets salvation, if it pleases Him, He can even salvage the stone hearted, if it pleases Him, He can preserve a body without breath, if it pleases Him, He can make a man utter His praises, if it pleases Him, He can emancipate the sinners. The Lord does whatever pleases Him and He himself deliberate on it. He is the Lord of both ends (worlds). He (The All-pervading nature of God) plays all the games and enjoys. He makes man to do things that He likes. Nanak sees none other like Him (pad 2).
What can a man do? It is Him (God) who wishes and then things get accomplished. If it was left to man then he would take everything away so whatever pleases Him that He does. It is man’s ignorance that he gets involved in sins, if he knew God then he could save himself from indulging in sins. All the doubts in man’s mind make him wander in all ten directions. In a second he returns from all four corners of the world (this shows the instability of mind that cannot concentrate on one thing at a time). But God blesses His devotee mercifully to grant him the meditation of His Name. That man, O Nanak is absorbed in His Name (pad 3).

million drink the elixir of His Name, millions upon millions keep singing His
praises and they are engrossed in this divine delight of His eternal beauty.
His servants remember Him with their every breath. Nanak they are the beloveds
of Lord (pad 8).

Sukhmani Sahib 26
Ashtapadi 10 continues: Many a
million are seers, celibates and Yogis, many a million are Kings who lust only
for enjoyment, many a million birds and snakes are created, many a million
stones and trees have been created, there are many a million wind, water and
fires, many a million are countries and regions of the earth, many a million
are moons, the suns and the stars, many a million are demigods, demons and
Indras wearing crown on their heads – all these creations The creator has on
His strings and He will emancipate only whom He will O Nanak (pad 3).
Many a million abide by the
disposition of passion, ignorance and calmness (these are three qualities of human nature), there are millions of
scriptures like Vedas, Smritis and Puranas and in the ocean many a million
pearls have been created, many a million
living creatures of various description have been created and many a million
from these have been given longer life, many a million mountains have been
turned to gold, many a million are high ranking Gods, celestial singers (Guru
ji have written Kinnar here from Hindu mythology these are people with horse head
and human body and they sing in the court of Gods in heaven), many a million
are evil spirits, ghosts and tigers (Mrigach- that hunt and feast on deer) – in
this creation The Lord is there and still far away because He is filling
everything in His Creation yet He remains oblivious O Nanak (pad 4).
Many a million are residents of the worlds
under earth, many a million become dwellers of hell or heaven, many a million
become trans- migratory souls (according to Hindu scriptures if the Moksha-freedom of soul from rebirth and merging into Almighty is not achieved in human birth the soul wanders through many other living forms), many million are useless and eat without work,
many a million are tired because they have to toll heavy labour, many a million
are created wealthy, many a million are engrossed and worried for wealth. It is
His (Lord’s) will where ever He keeps the mortals. Nanak everything is in His
Hands (pad 5).

Guru Granth Sahib
Sukhmani Sahib – 25
The Timeless Being (Akal Purakh) is praised by all living
creatures on this earth because he exists everywhere and gives life to everyone
(Astapadi; 10, 11).
Shlok: All type of people praise the
Lord, Who is without an end and without a limit and so has The Master created
his Creation in many ways and variety.
(Guru Nanak’s concept of God says
that one can spend all life to see an end or ultimate limit of His Creation but
it is difficult to fathom the expanse of His Creation – no one has been ever
successful in knowing the truth of sun, star, moon, planets, continents, and
variety of life on this earth. He, The Lord alone knows about His Expanse, and
how to handle it.)
Ashtapadi 10 begins: Many a million
are His worshippers, many a million are priests who perform various religious
rites and worldly deeds, many a million become residents of pilgrim places
(there is Hindu belief that once you get old you should become resident of a
pilgrim place so that after death one can directly go to heaven as these places
are believed to be the abode of God on earth), many a million wander in the
forests or wilderness, many a million listen to the recitation of Vedas, many a
million become ascetics, many a million have enshrined Lord in their heart by
meditation, many a million become poets and write poetry to deliberate over
Him, many a million are thinking of ever new Names to describe Him. After all
this deliberations O Nanak His limits cannot be known (pad 1).
Countless have become self-conceited
or ego ridden, countless are misers and stone hearted, countless are blindly
ignorant, countless are rude and insusceptible at heart, countless are stealing
other people’s wealth, countless are who slander others, countless are who
indulge only in wealth creation, countless wander into foreign lands. O Lord to
whatever you attaches the mortals to do they are doing that. Nanak, The Creator
alone knows what He is creating (pad 2).

Guru Granth Sahib
Sukhmani Sahib -24
Ashtapadi 9 continues:
One, in whose heart Supreme Lord
resides is the true servant of Lord and can be named so - Ramdas. He gets the
vision of The All Pervading Lord because of his nature of serving the Lord.
Because of this nature he keeps coming closer and closer to the Lord and thus
has the honour of being accepted in His Court. The Lord has mercy on him and
bestows all the knowledge to him. Once he has this knowledge about Lord he
becomes detached from the world even while remaining mixed in the company of
men (pad 6).
The Supreme Lord has certain orders
and one who has executed them according to His Will (hukam) becomes free of
cycle of rebirth in his own lifetime. Joys and sorrows of life are now equal to
him and in this state he enjoys everlasting bliss and suffers no separation
from the Lord. Gold and dust look alike to him, and he cannot distinguish
between nectar and poison. Honour and pride are same for him, so are King and pauper.
The Lord has played His talent to win such a servant who deems fit to be called
Ramdas – his servant. Nanak such man is emancipated while still alive (pad 7).
All the places (here human forms)
belong to the Lord and in whatever forms He lives within them so He names them
(on a deeper contemplation this verse matches the racial differences that Lord
has created on this earth). He (The Lord) has the capacity to get all things
done from humans as per His Will and that comes in its form. He has manifested
Himself in the endless waves. This play of the Supreme Being is beyond
understanding. Whatever he bestows as understanding that becomes enlightenment.
The Exalted Lord, The Creator is Imperishable. Nanak, by remembering such a
Lord is gratified (pad 8).
