Shlok Third Guru
The clouds come lower and lower and incessant rain falls. Nanak says a beloved who live in the Will of the Lord enjoys this beautiful season II 1 II
Third Guru
Why do you stand up and look at the sky for clouds again and again? This cloud has nothing to determine. He, who has sent this cloud, is to be treasured in your mind. If you treasure Him in mind He might shower His grace on you. Nanak, all those who are bereft of His grace are wailing only II 2 II
Pauri
Serve that Creator Lord ever who has the power to create and destroy in a second. He has stretched the sky alone overhead. In an instant He can build and destroy. He has created the world and He alone ponders over His creation.
The wayward is asked for an account for all his deeds and then punished.
The pious person is not asked for accounts but settled with honour and blessed with treasures of praises.
In that yonder world no one hears your cries and wailing. Only true Guru becomes your friend and saves you in last moment.
These creatures should serve only the true Guru because he is the Creator’s ambassador over their heads II 6 II
Shlok Third Guru
O rain bird everyone longs for Him whom you are calling. When the Lord showers His benediction then it rains and the forests and grass lands become green.
By Guru’s grace, the Lord is attained and this is understood by few. Sitting, standing the Lord is in mind then peace comes forever.
Nanak, by the grace of Guru the God oriented gets continuous flow of nectar II 1 II
Third Guru
When the world is in distress, it prays to the Lord in love. The true one listens intently giving His ear and comforts spontaneously.
God orders Indra the rain God and incessant rain falls. Corn is produced abundantly the wealth that it brings cannot be estimated in worth.
O Nanak, praise the Name of the God who gives sustenance to all beings. Eating well the mortals do not feel the pain any more II 2 II
Pauri
O Lord Master, you are the truest of the True. The man of truth, You merge in Yourself.
Those who live on the side of duality and deal in falsehood and ignorance cannot meet the Lord.
O Lord You unite and separate yourself and exhibit Your omnipotent presence in Your Creation.
Worldly love makes man separate from You and that brings sorrow but his deeds are pre-destined.
I sacrifice myself to those who remain tuned to Your feet.
God has created such people who can remain aloof like a lotus flower in the water.
They are blissful who can banish self conceit from within.
Those who remain merged in the Lord know not the separation and the pain arising from it II 7 II

Shlok Second Guru
The month of Sawan has come O my dear friend! It is time to think of your groom.
Nanak, the deceiving beloved who has started looking for another is discarded and ultimately wails herself to death (the mortal is the bride who has come to doubt about the oneness of the Lord and start believing and looking for another).
Second Guru
The sawan has come O my dear friend and the clouds are bursting and water is showering. Nanak says the beloveds who love their groom are sleeping in peace II 2 II
Pauri
God has Himself arranged the tournaments and created the arenas for the wrestlers ( Chhinj are wrestling tournaments that are very popular game in Punjab and arranged by several villages with fanfare).
Making noise the wrestlers enter in to the arena and from them the Guruwards are in joy and foolish and false egocentric ones stand defeated.
God Himself stages this play, wrestles and defeats. By Guru’s grace alone it is learned that the Lord is only One. The Lord alone is writer od destinies that too without the ink and the pen.
In the company of truthful saints where the praises of the Lord are sung a union with Lord is obtained.
Nanak says, by praising the True Lord one comes to realize the Lord’s truth II 4 II
Shlok Third Guru
When man comes to ageing his body bends forward and assumes another colour.
How can I know, how my love shall deal with the sovereign Lord?
Eternal becomes the love of those brides (mortals) who love the Lord from their heart and remain His fear (fear of not losing Him).
Nanak says all those brides who lose fear and love of their Lord become bereft of peace.
Third Guru
Descending low, very low the clouds shower the pure water.
In this season a bride whose mind is torn from her groom suffers pain (of separation) II 2 II
Pauri
God, Himself has created both sides, He the One Lord is pervading both. He created Vedas and the strife between the two.
One side is attachment and the other is sacrifice and created faith to make judgment between both sides.
False and worthless are ego ridden people and they definitely lose in the Lord’s court.
All those become warriors of the Lord who follow Guru’s word and control their lust and wrath.
Those who merge with the word and Name enter into the True Lord’s Mansion.
All those true devotees of thee O Lord who love your Name become pleasing to You.
I sacrifice to them who serve the True Guru II 5 II

If it rains in the month of Sawan four things are overjoyed.
The serpent, the deer, the fish and the revelers who have wealth in their homes II 1 II
First Guru
If it rains in the month of sawan four things suffer separation.
They are cows’ calves, the wayfarer, the poor and the servants II 2 II
Pauri
O True Lord He dispenses nothing but truth. He sits in a trance hiding from the world. The Brahma who sit on a lotus flower and is called great also cannot fathom Him and know His limits. He has no father and no mother, then who gave birth to you O Lord?  He has neither the Form nor the sign of all castes. He has no hunger no thirst but He is satiated. The True Lord has merged in Guru and served him with the word. His word He dispenses through Guru. By pleasing the True Lord even a mortal can merge in the Lord. II 2 II
Shlok First Guru
A physician is called to prescribe a remedy. He takes the arm and feel for pulse but the innocent physician knows not that the pain is in the mind II 1 II
Second Guru
You are one of the top physicians and if you are able to diagnose the remedy then prescribe such medicines that eradicate several maladies. Administer such medicines by which maladies vanish and peace comes to abide in the body. When you yourself get rid of ailments from your body you can be called a physician says Nanak II 2 II
Pauri
It is the Lord, who created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He gave Vedas to the Brahma and set him to recite His Name. The Lord created ten incarnations and one of them is King Rama. He killed the demons under His Will (Lord’s Will). The holy men and Shiva serve you O Lord but cannot fathom you end.
The Lord Master has established His own Kingdom where He himself evaluates the beings of this world. He sets the tasks for everyone but keeps Himself hidden away from the eyes of the world. He has willed that the world does righteous and virtuous deeds II 3 II

Vaar Malar    1

In 1521 Babur invaded India by butchering people and burning village after villages, he reaches Aimnabad (Now in Pakistan) and created havoc by mercilessly killing all males, captivating women and burning the entire town. Guru Nanak ji was returning after his third udasi (travel) along with Mardana when he was captured too in Aimnabad. The tyranny of the invader was so massive that Guru Nanak didn’t shy to reprimand the Almighty for His neglect of humanity. But later that year he writes this episode in Vaar form in Raag Malar. In this Vaar his hero is none other than Almighty Himself under whose Will the whole play is created and the lust and desire become like that fire that consumes everything once it is given freedom. This fire of lust and desire cannot be satiated even when one goes to live in the jungle, does fasting or several rites and penances. There are 28 Pauris or stanzas in this Vaar and one of them is written by Guru Arjun Devji and 27 stanzas are by Guru Nanak ji. The Vaar displays the socio-political conditions of the 16th century as it unfolds the truth studied by Guru Nanak ji so minutely.
Vaar Malar ki First Guru
To be sung in measure Rana Kailash and Malda.
There is but One God. By the True Guru’s grace He is attained.
Shlok Third Guru
By meeting the Guru the soul blossoms like the earth is embellished after first rain on the parched soil. Greenery comes to life all around and the ponds and lakes get filled to brim. The love of the True Lord attaches as the red colour to Madder (A plant with deep red colour flowers used for making dye). The heart blooms like lotus flower and happiness overtakes by obeying the words of Guru. Look around everywhere the wayward person is on the other side of the God. Ultimately he snares like a deer caught in the net of a hunter and sees the messengers of death coming to him lurking on his head. Vile are hunger and thirst for desires and horrible are the lust and wrath. Unless one contemplates on Lord the same eyes do not see the difference. When it pleases you O Lord you can make a man content and free him from all worldly entanglements. You save his capital investment in You O Lord because he makes Guru a ladder and a boat for his salvation. If the mind and heart become truthful O Nanak, whosoever is attached to the True Lord receives his quintessence II 1 II
First Guru
There is only one road and only one door (to reach God). He himself is the ladder to reach one’s own home.
Beauteous is the Lord O Nanak where all comforts attained in the True Name II2 II
Pauri
Lord has created Himself and He, alone knows Himself. He has separated earth from sky like a canopy over the firmament. His command is manifested only by His word and sky stands without pillars.
Creating the sun and moon He has infused His own light in them.
Creating day and night He has shown His wondrous plays.
He created the places for pilgrimages to contemplate on goodness and bathe on auspicious occasions.
There is no equal to You O Lord! How can I describe and narrate on you?
Thou alone are seated on the eternal throne O Lord, all others just come and go II 1 II
