As the Shahidi Gurparv of fifth Guru Arjun Devji is approaching it is time to remember the concept of sacrifices in Sikhism. Sacrifices are of great significance in Sikh religion. One can say there is a tradition of sacrifices not only by the Gurus but common men and women in accordance with the concept to fight for human rights and to challenge the draconian Rulers be they Moguls, Britishers or even Indira Gandhi.Northern India is not only the cradle of civilisation but the birth place of many religions, movements because the people here always faced the odds coming from west. Most invaders came for the loot but after Islamic Rulers the scenario changed for ever.Because they didn't come only for loot but to change the world according their confessions.Use of force is allowed in Islam for conversion into Islam and the Ruler could make his own set of rules. There are no set rules in Sharia and force and even killings are allowed to rulers. The house of Nanak challenged these Moguls who acquired power in India and started implementing taxes, rules and force on non-islamic people as they had done in the west on Ahle-Kitab that means Christians and Jews. The Islamic Rulers had become so powerful and to challenge them in itself was a big feat.Guru Arjun Devji became the first martyr.Guru Arjun Devji were the humblest person but the power of resistance was so great that his martyrdom is an example - he was made to sit on hot Tawa and hot sand was poured on him still the name of Waheguru didn't leave his lips then he was thrown in boiling hot water. In ancient Islamic tribes there was a belief that great souls should not be burnt or put in grave because their spirit can rise and each drop of their blood can create many more like them. After all these tortures Guru Arjun's body was thrown into River. With this he set a new tradition of sacrifices and infused a new sense of power to stand up and fight the tyrant.
