Sukhmani Sahib – 12
The illusions or Maya always attracts
people more intensely because it gives them wealth, power and position so one
can get engrossed in this. Only if His (Lord’s) Grace becomes evident the bliss
of His Name will be bestowed (Ashtapadi; 4, 5, 6).
Before we take up the next
classification of Ashtapadi 4, 5 and 6 a small note on Guru Arjun Devji is
required to understand these ashtapadis. The enlightenment that came from Guru Nanak
Devji that we call ‘jyot’ and its transmission into next Guruji successively up
to tenth Guru ji and then its foundation into an immortal Guru we name it Guru
Granth Sahib ji is nothing but Guru Nanakji’s deep contemplations on
socio-political degradation of social, political and moral values of
contemporary Indian society. The degradation of human values, the multiplicity
of Gods and Goddesses and guiding of people towards blind faith, fear and
suppression. Division of the society into Varnas and fate of a person to be
born into a specific varna lead some leaders of the society to assume power and
suppress the people. Guru Arjun Devji have described the degradation of these
human values that lead a normal person to these illusions of power, wealth and
status and his behavior becomes that of his oppressor. In these Ashtapadis
Guruji has tried to awaken the mortals to become that person whom Guru Nanak
called ‘Sachiyar’ or truthful because Wahe Guru ji (Supreme Being) is the
ultimate Truth and becoming truthful is coming close to the Almighty because He
likes His Creation (human) to be in that shape. Both Gurus in their bani have
given stress on education or knowledge because without that it is not possible
to attain the knowledge of truth. In these banis stress is given to the company
of saints that means people who believe in the power of Almighty that he is
Supreme, All knowing, all Pervading, Immanent and Benevolent and believe only
in Him as Power of One that is Ek Onkar. All these people are given a status of
saints or Brahm Giyani because they do not deviate from the meditation of One
God (where as in today’s time more and more people become self centered and
assume saints status for monetary gains). These banis gives us guidance or
sikhiya to become truthful persons. Reading Sukhmani Sahib and understanding its
full value gives us a deep understanding of Guru Arjun Devji that we don’t even
need a ‘Saakhi’ to understand him. His deep insight of tenets of Sikhism that
Guru Nanak ji established and documenting of all the knowledge in to Granth Sahib
so that world gets inspirations forever on right human values. Guru Arjunji’s
convictions were so strong that made him see the worse that will come forward
in the false world of illusions and falsehood that he will have to lay his
life. So he prepared his son Guru Hargobind ji to fight with tyranny but within
the reign of Almighty and not for power or to establish rule over people.

Ahtapadi 3 continues…
For the poor your Name is the wealth, for a shelter less Your
Name is a shelter, the one who has lost his honour; Your Name becomes his
honour. You (O God) give donations to all and make everything happen like every
action O Lord. He is the Supreme Being and knows the thoughts of every heart. You
know your own condition and estimation O Lord that is why you are always imbued
with yourself O Lord. You alone know your praiseworthiness and none else O
Nanak knows your praises (pad 7).
Of all the faith the best faith is to meditate on His Name
while doing pure deeds. Of all the religious rites the best rite is to abandon
the filth of evil intellect by associating the company of saints. Of all the
efforts the best effort is to ever meditating on His Name heartily. Of all the
speeches (Bani), the best is ambrosial speech (like Nectar) of hearing His Name
and to repeat it with the tongue. Of all the places, the best place is that
heart in which O Nanak dwells the Name of God (pad 8).
These three Ashtapadis where recitation on the Name of God
has been given importance end with a shlok :
O meritless and ignorant mortal (In Sikhism a mortal is known
as Jeev or prani) meditate on that Lord’s Name who has brought you to this
world (It is believed in the spiritual world that birth can take place only if
God wills). If you remember that your birth was His Will O Nanak Lord alone
will be your company.

Sukhmani Sahib - 10
Even when a man becomes excessively clever the fear of death
clings to him. All such people adapt to various methods of pleasing God for
example they start disguising in various religious garbs and make millions of
efforts but the fire doesn't extinguish and the mortal is not acceptable in
Lord’s court. One who is so entangled in worldly affairs and illusions of
wealth cannot get released by repairing with various garbs to the nether world.
Death penalizes all such repairing efforts if one has not saved for the
meditation of the Lord of the World. By repeating His Name sorrow is dispelled.
Nanak instinctively utters the Name of the Lord (pad 4).
There are four elements of desire they are; righteousness,
prosperity, fulfilment of desires and freedom from rebirth cycle. On this
matter Guruji says; he who desire the four cardinal boons must come into
service of holy men, to efface the agonies from one’s life he should sing the
praises of the Lord in his mind, if man desires honour he should renounce self
conceit (ego) and come into the company of saints, if one fears the cycle of
rebirth he should come into protection of holy persons. Nanak is ready to offer
his services to one who has developed the thirst for the sight of Lord (pad 5).
One who can abandon his ego in the company of saints becomes
a supreme man from amongst all men. One who deems himself from amongst the most
humble is the one counted highest of all. One whose mind becomes dust of all
sees God’s Name in every heart. One who effaces malice from his heart sees
whole world as his friend. One who sees joy and woes as equal O Nanak is not
affected by evil and good (pad 6).

Shlok: I have been searching through all Shastras and Smritis
( Hindu religious scriptures), Nanak they are not worshipping equal to the Priceless
Name of the Akal Purakh (Timeless Being).
Begin of Ashtapadi 3: recitation of religious books, penance,
religious discussions and meditation, the exposition of all six Hindu
philosophies and religious ceremonial books (Smritis), the practice of Yoga and
religious rituals, the abandonment of everything and wandering into forests,
performance of various acts like – giving away alms, oblation to fire, bestowing jewels (for idols), cutting of the
body into small pieces ( Acts of sacrifices of human and animals) and offering
them to fire (hom), fasting and vows of many kind (sukhna) all these are not
equal to the contemplation of Lord’s Name - Even if the Name be repeated only
once in the company of a God-oriented (Gurmukh) O Nanak(Pad-1).
One may roam about in nine regions of this earth and obtain a
long life, one may become a great ascetic by performing many penances, one may
burn self in fire, one may give gifts of gold, horses of excellent breed and
donate lands, one may make acts of inner washing and many meditative postures,
one may adopt the mortifying acts of Jains like abstinence and renouncing for
spiritual bliss and cut His body in to small pieces. All is in vain if a
particle of filth of ego (haume) does not depart. There is nothing equal to the
recitation of God’s Name by uttering which with the help of Gurmukh, O Nanak the
salvation is obtained (pad 2).
Many people who
believe they are religious have a desire that they will leave this human body
(die) at the place of pilgrimages and many Hindu pilgrimage places have
lodgings for such people who wait there for death to come to go to heaven in
the presence of God. In the next pad Guruji says; by giving up body at
pilgrimage man’s minds desire, ego and conceit are not removed. Though man may
perform acts of purification day and night but filth of the mind does not
depart from his body. Though man may subject his body to much mortification yet
evil passions never abandon his soul. Even though man may wash this transitory
body with plenty of water, how can these frail walls will be cleansed? O soul
highest is the praise of Lord’s Name that has emancipated the great sinners
(pad 3).

Ashtapadi (2); In this pad Guru Arjun Devji details the
experience after coming into company of Saints, he says: God’s Name is the
salvation to his slaves, he is satisfied with the food of His Name, beauty and
delight is felt while uttering His Name, by uttering His Name obstacles never
befall, by uttering His Name the devotee feels the glory and obtains the
honour. By uttering God’s Name the satisfaction of yoga is lived and there are
no pangs of separation from Him. God’s slave is imbued with the service of His
Name O Nanak, worship the bright Lord God (pad 6).
God’s Name is the treasure house to His devotees; this
treasure has been given by the Lord Himself. God’s name is the powerful
protection to His devotees and they are not devoid of His Glory, like warp and
woof they are imbued with His Love (warp is the length wise yarn and woof is
the yarn that goes perpendicular while making textile of yarn). The Lord’s
slave is intoxicated with the essence of His Name that all eight hours of the
day he is merged in His Name. He becomes distinguished and not hidden; His devotional
service has given salvation to many. The company of such people has helped many
to salvation (pad 7).
The name of the God is elysian tree ( parjat is one of the five
trees that came after churning of the ocean by Gods and Demons and God’s took
it to become immortal –from Hindu mythology). The singing of Lord’s praises is
like Kamdhenu (A cow that fulfills the wishes). By hearing His Name pain and
sorrow are forgotten. The God’s Name abides within the saint’s mind and that helps
all the sin to flee. The company of saints is obtained by luck so be in their
service because there is nothing to compare to God’s Name, O Nanak some rare
people have the fortune to receive His Name (pad 8).

Ashtapadi 2: The Name and glory of God continues for the
salvation from a difficult situation, Guru Arjun ji says; where man cannot be
saved from millions of helping arms he is saved immediately by reciting His Name.
Where many misfortunes befall and ruin the man there the Name of God saves him
instantly. Man dies and is born in many existences (Hindu belief that man is
reborn in many jony’s – existences because he could not get salvation in his
human birth) but he obtains rest if he meditates on God’s Name. The man defiles
himself with the filth of self conceit (Haume) which cannot be washed away but uttering
His Name all the sins are purged from mind. Such Name thou repeat O soul in the
company of saints with loves O Nanak (pad- 3).
On the path whose miles cannot be counted God’s Name is that
treasure that you can spend to finish your journey. On the path where the pitch
darkness is existing God’s Name will come as a light to illuminate your path. On
the path, you are all alone without company of any acquaintances you will be recognized
with God’s Name. On the path, where there is terrible heat and sun is burning hot
God’s Name will give you shade. Where O man thirst sucks out your breath God’s
name will rain as Nectar – Amrit (pad 4).
With the devotees God’s name is like a utensil of everyday
use. It gives peace to the heart of saints. God’s Name is support of His
slaves. With God’s Name millions have been emancipated. The saints utter His
Name day and night. For saints God’s Name is like medicine. For God’s servant
His Name is like treasure. The Supreme Lord has given the grace of His Name as
a gift (To saints). The saint’s body is imbued with the Grace and Love of One
Lord (His Name). Nanak, Divine knowledge is the livelihood of His slaves (pad
5).

Sukhmani Sahib - 6
Guru Arjun Devji in pad -6 mentioned that recitation is being
philanthropic or par – upkari. This virtue he lived in his life true to his
nature must get a mention here before we proceed. In 1585 there was a great
famine in Punjab and Guruji were in Wadali west of Amritsar where Guru
Hargobind ji were born. He helped people of the region to dig wells and
wherever there was abundant water he introduced six channeled water drawing
system known as Chheharta wells so that famine could be faced and people and
cattle could be saved. In the same year some epidemic (small pox or seethla)
spread in Lahore and Guruji spent eight months there in the service of people.
His greatest contribution to his philanthropic nature was spread of education
because he believed that education itself is philanthropic- vidya vichari te aap parupkari.
Ashtapadi -2 in this first pad of Ashtapadi 2 he takes such
people under his protection who fall prey to distress and depression due to
various reasons and causes. He explains how the recitation of the timeless
being helps. He says; when you have no mother, father, brother, son and friend,
O soul God’s name will be with you as helper. When the terrible messengers of
death try to crush you Only God’s name will go with you. Even when you have
great obstacles reciting His name will remove that in a moment. The mortals are
not saved by performing acts of remorse or penance. The Name of god washes
millions of sins and reciting His Name through Guru all the bliss and comfort
will be yours (pad – 1).
The King of whole world is unhappy, but he who recites His
Name becomes happy. By reciting His Name man becomes free of millions of
bondage. The riches of the world may not satiate but reciting His Name
satiates. On the way where man goes alone The Name of God goes with you. Recite
on such a Name O soul that the dignity of being God oriented (Gurmukh) is
attained O Nanak (pad 2).

Guru Granth Sahib
Sukhmani Sahib -5
It is very amusing to note that most people don’t know the
meaning of ‘simran’ and for many simran is just continuous recitation of Satnam
Wahe Guru like a mantra Jaap with or without rosary. In Sukhmani Sahib Guru
Arjun ji has beautifully presented the method and analysis at the same time to
withdraw power of reciting the Name of Akal Purakh He says; They who
contemplate over the Master are philanthropically leaned and Nanak is ever
prepared to sacrifice or offer himself to those who have such virtuous character
because all such people who contemplate on His name their face become
beautiful, they get peaceful disposition, they conquer their mind, they become
pious in their life and they get manifold joys, they get to abide by the Lord
and by the favour of Saints they become watchful day and Night. O Nanak Lord’s meditation
is achieved by the perfect luck (Pad – 6). Becoming philanthropic (Par-upkari)
is one of the ways of ‘simran’ or recitation.
Keeping the company of those who can mould you to accomplish
the tasks or duties, who never allow you to grieve, who make you or help you to
sing His praises so that you get absorbed in God and find an immovable seat in
His presence, make your heart blossom in to Lotus bloom and you hear the sound
of celestial music that gives you eternal peace, recite His Name O Nanak in
their company who have His Grace. O Nanak seek the asylum in their feet (pad –
7).
By reciting on His name ordinary mortals become saints, Vedas
get composed, low born become known in all four directions, the entire earth
gets installed, remembering Him remember the cause of Creation and making of
form and in this form He the Formless being has placed Himself. O Nanak the God
oriented (Gurmukh) are graced with understanding so obtain this boon by keeping
their company (pad-8)
Shlok: O Thou Destroyer of pain and grief of the poor, lord of
every heart, Himself has no Master (He is the super Master – none is above Him),
I have come into your protection O Lord be with Nanak.

Sukhmani Sahib is recorded in Guru Granth Sahib from page (Ang)
262 onwards. In the first three Ashtapadis the glorification of One Single
Timeless Being ( Akal Purakh) and by meditating on His Name the transformation
that can be effected in personal development is elaborated. This is pure
spiritual guidance that a wandering and restless soul can make use of to
achieve the harmony and peace in one’s life. The Ashtapadis begin with the
praise of only One Lord for all humanity whom Guru Nanak calls Ek Onkar. The
Only One undivided Lord can be obtained with the grace of True Guru. Ashtapadi
begins and ends with shlok and the beginning shlok says; I bow to thee, O
Primordial Lord. I bow to thee, O Lord who is there from the beginning. I pay
obeisance to the True, venerable Divine Guru.
Ashtapadis begin (Pad -1 ): Meditate on His Name (GOD). By
meditating on His Name you will attain peace and efface from within the strife
and anguish. Recite and praise on His Name who is the only Supreme Support of
this world. His various Names are being recited by countless number of people.
Even the Vedas, Puranas and Smritis have created One Word of Lord’s Name. When
He (God) places an atom like particle of His existence in somebody’s heart, his
greatness cannot be counted. O Lord save Nanak with those, your grace, who are desirous
of Your Name alone.

The simran or
recitation of Akal Purakh (The Timeless Being) is greater than all other
religious rituals (Ashtapadi ;1,2,3)
Sukhmani Bani is a routine (nitnem) bani but it is not
ritually recited as Asa di waar, Japuji Sahib, Rahiras, Kirtan Sohila and Arti.
The reason behind this is not known to me and I assume it is done because
firstly it is a very long recitation and secondly it is not a bani that is used
for awakening the masses that had fallen into slumber of social degradation and
oppression rather it is a guidance to achieve the bliss of union with the Primal
Lord (Akal Purakh). Asa di waar has been written by Guru Nanak ji at various
periods and places and compiled by Guru Arjun ji with all verses that have a
similar central theme. Though it is thematic but touches several socially relevant
aspects which are different in nature from each other. The Sukhmani Sahib a
creation of Guru Arjun Devji is a well thought, well versed with buildup of
central theme that leads a person to achieve the blissful union with the Lord
and building a personal development of character that is acceptable to Lord.
This makes like minded people to come together and create a society that
becomes God oriented (Gurmukh). The language of this bani is contemporary to
Guruji’s time but he has made it easier to understand. With this beautiful
poetry he has created a congenial atmosphere to find solace for the soul that
soothes senses and stops the wandering mind to look for anything else but One
Primal Lord. Each Ashtapadi has eight verses and ten lines and sometimes
interspersed with a shloka.
Sukhmani Sahib gives us glimpses of Guru Arjun Devji’s
personality that he was extremely pious, gentle, and soft spoken, without
malice, a great visionary and social reformer who could create so much fear in
his antagonists that they made him pay with his life. In his martyrdom he
leaves us a legacy of conviction and truthfulness to your purpose of life over
your own life. A new tribe of people was being created that would fight for
righteousness and justice till death. He was a very worthy person to inherit
Guru Nanak’s nascent revolution and to bring it to very logical conclusion by
compiling Guru Granth Sahib and giving the Sikhs a foundation to build upon it -
a great religion that is secular, humanitarian and has capacity to make bravest
people. He faced antagonism from the rulers and his own brothers but was never
in fear of the situation and faced his martyrdom with all conviction of great
and brave men of the history.
His Sukhmani Bani should not fall prey to a routine
recitation to bring you in the company of people that recite like mantras
without co-relating to the purpose that is why we shall examine each Ashtapadi
to make a complete understanding.

Village Sojourn –
Punjab 2014 September-October
There is a phrase in Punjabi that I heard many times but never tried to understand and this time for my sojourn in my village I had lots of time to read articles and I came across it again and understood its full meaning, the phrase says; jorian jag thorian narar bathere. The meaning and its impact made me aware of the social degradation that our Society has adopted despite the fact that Gurbani has tried to awaken us but we fail to learn. The phrase clearly says that there very few married couples who are compatible and complement each other and are soul mates the rest are all forced marriages .When I saw around the truth dawned upon me. The classified columns of all News papers for marriage alliances alone are enough to tell you the story. The seekers of marriage alliances are always demanding package deals and these deals sound like; son/ daughter is MBBS so only parents with MBBS daughters/son need to apply. Girl/boy should be IELTS or Nurse only then apply. Only those parents should apply who can take the younger brother of the girl abroad. We are Army officers for many generations so only parents suiting our status should apply. We are a status family apply only if you match our status. Reading these classified ads is so hilarious that if you want to have hearty laugh you don’t need a joke book. The sad part though remains unhappy, unmatched, fraudulent forced marriages that make everyone sad. A daughter-in-law from my village committed suicide and that made me so sad and helpless this time that I find it difficult to express my feelings and anger at the same time. The girl was a graduate and studying for her post graduation and was forced to live in the village by her soldier husband to look after his parents and the girl was facing one humiliation after another. The soldier had another affair and he forced her to listen to his video conferencing with his girl friend and humiliate her so much to force a divorce from her. The worst part is that his parents did not support the daughter-in- law. The tragedy was waiting to happen. Counselling services are not known in rural areas and so many precious lives take extreme step after being dejected.
Where is our society heading? The lure of the foreign has made many miserable. I met a girl in UK who belonged to a very rich Sikh family in Calcutta but her mother’s friends had all married their daughters in foreign so she also was forced to marry someone who was himself not legal citizen in UK so for many years both had to work for Desi shop owner and hide in his shop at nights. After 13 years they became legal citizens of UK but the terrible life style made that girl so sick that she lost her balance and dreads even the oncoming winter. She just cannot enjoy life any more. Is it just?

Is it just?

Guru Granth Sahib
Sukhmani Sahib 1
Sukhmani Sahib is very popular bani amongst Sikhs and people make groups in big cities to recite these bani in congregation. The idea behind this type recitation is its central theme that says; Sukhmani sukh amrit prabh naam II Bhagat jana kay manah bisram II 1II Rahao II meaning; reciting the name of Lord is the origin of all the bliss and one gets this bliss in the company of God oriented people because God and His Name recites in their hearts. Rest of the Sukhmani bani is definition of this central theme.
Sukhmani Sahib is the creation of Guru Arjun Devji that he has recorded in Guru Granth Sahib in Raag Gauri and the art of literature used is known as Ashtapadi or with eight verses. There are 24 ashtapadis that can be further divided thematically to come to the conclusion of Sukhmani meaning Name (of the Lord) is like a precious stone that bestows the bliss. The thematic division of Sukhmani is as follows:
1) The simran or recitation of Akal Purakh (The Timeless Being) is greater than all other religious rituals (Ashtapadi ;1,2,3)
2) The illusions or Maya always attracts people more intensely because it gives them wealth, power and position so one can get engrossed in this. Only if His (Lord’s) Grace becomes evident the bliss of His Name will be bestowed (Ashtapadi; 4, 5, 6).
3) When God’s Grace is bestowed then one joins the company of Sadh Sangat (people who have achieved the harmonious union with Lord and have become blessed to become part of the soul of His Lordship), you may call these people Gurmukh, Brahmgyani or Sadhu (Ashtapadi; 7,8 ,9).
4) The Timeless Being (Akal Purakh) is praised by all living creatures on this earth because he exists everywhere and gives life to everyone (Astapadi; 10, 11).
5) The one who is blessed to recite His Name and praises must take care of the following virtues; a – he must become humble in nature (Ashtapadi 12), b – he must not slander anyone (Ashtapadi 13), c – He must concentrate on the Timeless being because He is the one who will and can fulfil all wishes and needs (Ashtapadi 14, 15).
6) How is that Timeless Being (Akal Purakh)? He exists in every being still He is free of illusions or maya (Ashtapadi 16).
7) He (Lord ) is indestructible (Ashtapadi 17) because He is forever there and by reciting His Name our soul gets enlightened with His presence (Ashtapadi 18) .
8) The Name of the Lord alone is that wealth that gives company to the human soul when his time comes to go to nether world (Ashtapadi 19).
9) If one supplicates at His Door one can achieve this wealth of His Company (Ashtapadi 20).
The God whom we call Nirgun because He has no form, shape, relationship becomes Sargun by existing in every life Form (Ashtapadi 21, 22).
When He becomes enlightened as the knight of knowledge in the human soul then one realizes His existence is everywhere (Ashtapadi 23).
God is the treasure house of all virtues and by reciting (Simran) His Name one gets the Bliss of His Precious Name that is Sukhmani (Ashtapadi 24).
