Profession
Yesterday's news of two girls of a Nursing college in Karnataka attempting to rag a junior girl almost send her to death bed by pouring phenyl down her throat not only disturbed me and shook me but made me think of the process by which selection of professions are made. What plays in the individuals mind? Is it the money ? Is it the peer pressure? Is it the sheep mentality? One thing that misses is the passion for the profession. Professions like that of Doctors and nurses need more of the passion then any other professions because we are dealing with human lives, fears, faith in a doctors. Exactly for this reason selection for courses in medical professions shouldn't be left to merits alone or entrance tests. The human factor, respect for human life, compassion for sick and needy should become part of the criteria for selection to medical courses. No doubt business acumen is required to maintain big hospitals still the humanity factor should weigh far more importance than commercials of running a hospital. Just imagine two girls with vicious thinking and acts becoming care takers of human lives that are helpless and vulnerable on a hospital bed somewhere in India!
