Inner Strength - 12
Many Sikh Gurus have sacred association with water and water bodies. Guru Nanak during his travels have helped search water in parched lands like places in Delhi called Nanak Piao or Bidar and many more place that are not recorded. People say with his divine power he could search for water resource. Guru Amardasji constructed Baoli sahib at Goindwal Sahib because the water of Bein river used to dry in summer. Guru Ramdasji started the digging work of lake where now Harmandir Sahib is standing. It was mainly for the devotees who came from far-off places to do the karseva and their horses. This water source was also used for the construction work of Harmandir Sahib. Guru Arjun Devji constructed Chheherta water drawing system to fulfill the need of water scarcity in the areas of Majha. All Gurus were very practical people and always made lakes, wells to fulfil the needs of local people. But the appendages of Hinduism remained stuck with us and we have made these water sources into places for holy dips.Thousands of people when take a dip in holy waters definitely leave their sweat and germs in to water. How can this water remain holy? When we go swimming in a swimming pool we are instructed to take a shower before entering into the swimming pool so that we don't dirty the water. We have no such facilities near holy waters. I was once visiting the Gurudwara in Tarn Taran Sahib. Standing near the pool I saw one lady trying to give a dip to her Baby of three months. Within seconds the baby slipped from her hands and in trying to save her she drowned and died and the baby too. May be many such accidents take place at these holy dip enthusiasm.
We have a very nice tradition of washing our feet before entering into the premises of Gurudwaras. This helps to maintain the cleanliness of the premises. But some people try to make a wrong tradition out of it by taking a handful of water and drink it from this feet washing area. Is it Gurmat? How can you get purified from dirty water? Instead of making and following wrong traditions we should concentrate on teachings of Gurbani make the soul pure by visiting holy places so that the light spread by Guru Nanak remains bright.
