Summer of 2014 in Punjab
After a good thrashing of Akalis and BJP in Punjab for neglecting and ignoring the needs of aam admi it was time to save face for Akalis. It was crucial for them to get ministerial birth of the rank of union cabinet minister. A ten day New Delhi camping resulted in a Union Cabinet birth with a reprimand to get things going against root cause problems that costed them many seats particularly loss of Arun Jaitely in Amritsar. The rejection of ruling party by people is a matter of shame. CM launched a massive drug addiction eradication programme. The question is," why in the first place the massive breakdown of government machinery took place?" The answers are many and first and foremost is the electioneering campaigns for past two decades where all parties indulge in distributing free liquor and drugs and cash for votes. Truck loads of liquor reach villages during election campaigns and certain candidates brew their liquor and try to please villagers for weeks. The drink culture was promoted with the blessings of Akalis and Congress. If you carefully check the list of candidates of both these parties many of these candidates thrive on liquor businesses and distilleries. Many own distilleries even outside Punjab. With their dirty drug money they not only buy seats in Panchayats, Vidhan sabhas and Parliament but also spread the social evil by paying goons and obstructing justice at police level. The backbone of rural Punjab the farmer was at the receiving end because this menace spread more in rural areas and became vicious because of lack of education, psychotherapy remedies and easy availability of drugs through grass root level workers of political parties. Guru Nanak would have said,"Kur varat gaya,' The darkness was spread by the rulers.
