Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Vaar maajh 2
In Guru Nanak’s Vaar
poetry his Knight or Hero is Almighty God. Guru Nanak ji discovered that it is
his play that is being played in this world. Guru Nanak ji ask this Almighty
for the solution to the chaotic happenings that are taking place in his
motherland. God has answered his prayers as He believed in this seeker who
recited on His Name to unite with Him. What Guru Nanak obtained was several of
His Banis or word that Guru has shared with us all.
In his composition of Vaar
maajh Guru Nanak has left a message that self respect and fearlessness are
supreme ideals that only will get honour and glory in God’s court. Vaar maajh
shows the wandering of man into degradation of his living and reasons for his
loosing self respect and how it can be regained.
Eulogy in Maajh measure
and shlok by first Guru to be sung in malikmurid and chandrahara sohia:
There is but One God. True
is his Name and creative His personality. By the Guru’s grace He is obtained.
Shlok Mahala First: The
Guru is the giver, the Guru is the house of ice (because His presence gives us
coolness) and Guru is the light of three worlds. The Guru possesses the eternal
wealth (His grace), O Nanak by putting all your hearts faith in him peace is
obtained II 1 II
First Guru:
In the beginning man
cherishes the breast milk and has affection for it. Secondly he becomes aware
of the relation to his mother and father. Thirdly he recognizes his brother,
his wife and sister. In the fourth stage love for play arises in him. Fifthly
he runs after food and drink. Sixth stage an urge for woman arises and he does
not bother for her caste. In seventh stage he amasses wealth and makes an abode
for himself. In the eighth stage due to his wrath (that he develops running
after all illusions) destroys his body. In the ninth stage his hair turn grey
and his breathing becomes difficult. In the tenth stage his body is burnt to
ashes and his companions cry loud in his grief. The swan (his soul) flies away
asking for the right path. Man came and went and his name dies with him. After
his departure from this world, food is offered to the crows on leaves (there is
a Hindu belief that the soul of a person keeps wandering around his house even
after his death so food is offered to crows because fist transmigration of soul
is in the crow form). Says Nanak that a wayward (manmukh) loves the spiritual
darkness, without the True Guru the world is drowned II 2 II
First Guru:
At age ten one is still a
child and youth comes at twenty and by age thirty man becomes handsome, at
forty the adulthood is in fullness but at fifty the backward movement
(withdrawal from all activity) starts showing and at sixty old age starts
catching up. At seventy man starts losing his intellect and he cannot perform
all his duties. At ninety he takes up to cot and being weak he absolutely
forgets what strength is. Searching and seeking Nanak found that the world is a
mansion of smoke II 3 II
