Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Vaar  Maajh    3

Pauri
O Omnipotent and Unapproachable Creator Person you have created this world with variety of colours, wonderful dyes and kinds. With this creation you make us understand that this is all your play. Some are born, some get up and others depart without the Name all die. The Guruward are like the colours of Poppy flowers (Poppy flowers have very brilliant dye that attracts from far). They are imbued with the colour of God’s love. Serve that all powerful True and Pure Lord who writes your destiny. O Lord you are wise, of the entire great person yours is the greatest personality.I sacrifice my devotion to all those who have enshrined you within their hearts and minds O my True Lord II 1 II
Shlok First Guru
Having created the body God has infused life in it and made arrangements to protect it. Man sees with his eyes, speaks with his tongue and fixes his attention by hearing with his ears. He has been given feet to walk, hands to work and also given clothing and food. A man is blind who understands not that all is given by Him and keeps doing dark deeds. An earthen pitcher when broken crumbles into pieces and cannot be remoulded again. Says Nanak; there is no honour or self respect without His Name and without honour the world ocean cannot be crossed II 1 II
Second Guru
A false wayward person prefers the gifts given by Great Giver (God) then the God himself. When he thinks in this perverse manner what can one say more about his intelligence, understanding and cleverness? A mortal doing virtuous deeds from within his heart are known in all four directions. A righteous person is doing right things is known as Virtuous and the one committing sins is known as sinner. These are all plays of the Creator why talk of another? O Lord it is your light within mortals that illuminates his body to become virtuous. If someone does good deeds without your spark within then I shall call him wise. Nanak, the Lord who alone is accomplished and immanent is made manifest by Guru’s instructions II 2 II
Pauri

You created this world O Creator and make them do their work. You have given them this intoxicating worldly love and let them go astray. This fire of desires that you have burnt in them does not satiate and they remain hungry and thirsty. Illusionary is this world where mortal is reborn and his coming and going continues. People have become weary of these illusions and this love for illusions will not break without a True Guru and his instructions. When it pleases the True Lord the mortal is sated with joy by remembering the Name with Guru’s instructions. The mortal thus saves his lineage and blessed is the mother who gave birth to him. He becomes beauteous and his understanding becomes magnificent who has fixed his mind to remember the Lord II 2 II
