Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Vaar Maajh 4
Shlok second Guru;
To see without eyes, to
hear without ears, to walk without legs, to work without hands and to speak
without tongue such a living is like being dead while still alive. O Nanak
recognize His Will if you ever want to meet your spouse (God) II 1 II
Second Guru;
Some say Lord can be seen,
heard and known but no one can explain the taste of His meeting. How can a
lame, armless and blind person embrace the Lord? Make fear of God your feet,
His love your hands and His understanding your eyes; Says Nanak, this way O
wise woman (mortal)you shall accomplish union with the Bridegroom (God) II 2 II
Pauri
Forever and ever You are
but One O Lord secondly You have created this world as play. You also create
self conceit, arrogance and infused avarice into the mortals. You keep me the
way as it pleases you. Everyone does as you direct them. Even then some get
attached to the Guru’s instructions you pardon them and unite them with you.
Some stand at your door in your service as nothing is more pleasing than your
Name to them. Only service to you is worth to them all other work is worthless.
Some remain attached to you while living with all their relations like wife,
son and others. They become immaculate from within and without because they get
absorbed in your Name II 3 II
Shlok First Guru;
I dug up a cavern in the
mountain of gold in search of water to reach nether land, standing on my head
upside on land and in the sky, my daily routine is to cover my body with
clothes washed daily and chant loudly from Vedas of all colours, white the
Samveda, red the rigveda, yellow the yajurveda and black the atharveda. I cover
my body with dirt and ashes but all this evil intellect and pernicious
mentality is not me that was, not me that is and not me that shall be is of any
worth unless I ponder over the Name of God II 1 II
First Guru;
Man washes his body,
washes his clothes and thinks he has become pure and washes not the filth that
is in his mind and keeps cleansing the outer surface. The ignorant go astray
and fall in the noose of death. He tries to possess what doesn’t belong to him
and because of his ego of achieving what is not his he suffers pain. Nanak says
when that pride or ego is dispelled with the help of Guru’s instructions then
he reflects over the Name of the God. Name he repeats, on Name he meditates and
with Name he absorbs peace.
Pauri
Body and soul (swan is the
name given to soul) are destined to unite but He, who has created this union
has also written their separation. The fool enjoys revels and then suffers all
agonies. All worldly pleasures are at
the cost of becoming sinner and diseased. All this sinful enjoyment is preceded
with sorrow, separation from the Lord, birth and death. Entering into the
accounts of all sins, misdeeds a fool is stuck in strife. The True judge over
all this strife is the Lord who puts an end to this dispute. Only what the
Creator will do happens and if the man wants to efface all strife it is not
done.
