Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Vaar Maajh 17
Shlok: First Guru
If fire is my dress, if I
make snow as my house and iron as my food and drink all my problems as water
and pull the cart with earth as the puller;
If I weigh the sky in a
balance with copper weight;
If I become so large that I
cannot be contained in anything and put noose in the nose and pull everyone by
it;
If I become so powerful
within my mind that I can move others to perform at my will; but all this is in
vain because;
As great as Lord is so
great are His gifts and He satiates everyone with them.
His merciful glance alone
bestows the glory of True Name.
Second Guru
The mouth is not sated by
speaking and the ears not by hearing.
The eyes don’t get sated
with what they see. Every organ is a buyer of some unique quality.
Just by talking the hunger
is not satiated.
The hunger but satiates if
the Name of the Lord is recited by singing His praises O Nanak, uttering His
Name a mortal gets absorbed in it II 2 II
Pauri
Without the True Lord all
are false and practice falsehood.
Without the True One the
falsehood is bound and pushed forward.
Without the true Master
the body becomes dust and mixes in the dust.
Without the True Master
the food and dress becomes only hunger.
Without the True name the
false ones cannot enter His court.
Being attached to the
false avarice man loses the Mansion of the Lord.
The whole world is
deceived by the deceitful Mammon (Illusions) and that keeps the coming and
going in this world.
The fire of desires in the
body can be quenched only with God’s Name II 19 II
