Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Vaar Maajh   18

Shlok First Guru
Says Nanak; Guru is a tree of contentment whose flowers are faith and fruits are Divine knowledge.
Watered by God’s love it remains evergreen and its fruits ripen with virtuous deeds and meditation.
Self respect and honour are obtained by relishing this bliss and this honour and self respect are greatest gift ever II 1 II
First Guru
Guru is the tree of Gold whose leaves are of coral, flowers are of jewels and rubies. The utterances of Guru are emerald fruit of this golden tree and within the heart of his hearts he beholds the Lord.
Says Nanak; only those fortunate ones are blessed who have destiny written on their forehead and face.
Even the sixty eight places of pilgrimages seek that the exalted Guru blesses the place with his feet and they can worship him.
Cruelty, worldly love , avarice and wrath are four streams of fire. By falling in these streams the mortal is burnt. The emancipation comes only by doing good deeds II 2 II
Pauri
While still living the death is to be subdued otherwise there is only regret later.
Few understand that this world is but falsehood. The love is not confessed for the True One but man runs after worldly affairs. The fear of death is inevitable but the period of this inauspicious death dangle over the head of the world.
When the Lord commands the messengers of death strike a blow with their club on man’s head.
When the Lord bestows His love it enshrines within the mortal’s mind.
When the measure of life is full the departure happens in a trice or a moment without delay.
By Guru’s grace the mortal can know the True Lord and absorb in Him II 20 II
