In sawan be happy o my soul. The season has come when the
clouds rain. I love my spouse with my soul and body but my darling has gone abroad.
My beloved comes not home and I am dying of sorrow of separation, the flash of
lightening frightens me.

In bhadon the bride in the bloom of youth strays in doubt but
she regrets afterwards. The ponds and meadows are filled with water and it is
time for merry making. It rains during the dark night. How can the young bride
have peace? The pied cuckoo calls priye- priye and the snakes are on their
biting spree. The ponds are filled to the brim and mosquitoes are stinging.
Without the Lord how can the wife obtain comfort?

Summer is left behind and the winter lies ahead. There is

In the month of katak what pleases the Lord is recorded in
the mortal’s destiny. The lamp that gets enlightened by the knowledge and truth

with her groom.

Guru Granth
Sahib - 11
In his last phase of
life Guru Nanak ji settled at Kartarpur and it is believed that he wrote there his last composition barah maha
in rag Tukhari. Traditionally barah maha is literary form of folklore nature
that is sung to express the intense feelings of separated lovers and the back
ground is the changing season of the year. The separation becomes unbearable in
the seasons where Papiha a crested cuckoo starts calling his mate and keeps
saying priye-priye and the koyal the black cuckoo starts singing to call mate
in the seasons nearing rains. This folklore art has been used by Guru Nanakji
to establish his love relationship with the Almighty. The shingar-ras is used
to express the intense feeling and the focus here is woman as the separation
from him becomes unbearable. The bara maha composed by Guru Nanak is a
beautiful composition that immortalizes the love of a beloved for spouse
(Almighty) and becomes inspirations to several poets to write in his style and
how a popular folklore art can be used to associate spiritually. To establish
relationship with Almighty the woman in form of beloved becomes figure because
the emotions of pride and careless attitude that takes the beloved away from
her and he stops paying attention to her and when she sees that other married realizes
her folly and tries to do away with her ego and with that the desire to have her
separated spouse back, she starts singing her praises for him. Ultimately there
is union between her and the beloved. This composition is spread over several
pages from page 1107 to 1113 in Guru Granth Sahib. We will take the verses
specific to months only. Though to understand the beauty of expressions,
feelings and self-understanding of follies, whole of the composition is worth
reading. Nanak varse amrit bani kari
kirpa ghar aveh II Nanak, when the ambrosial Gurbani rains the Lord
graciously comes into my home.
Chet basant bhala
bhavar suhavade II ban phule manjh baar me pir ghar bahude II pir ghar nahin
aveh dhan kiyon such pave birah borodh tan chhije I
In chet the season is agreeable with beautiful bumble bees
around. The forests start blooming in front of my door. May my beloved come
home! The separation is withering her body.
Vaisakh bhala sakha ves
kare II dhan dekhe har duar aweh daya kareh II ghar aao piyare dutar tare tud
bin adh na mele II
Pleasant is vaisakh when the tree-bough adorns itself new.
The bride will be thankful to see her Lord if He takes pity and come to her
door. Come home my Beloved! Ferry me across the difficult world ocean. Without thee
I am not worth a shell.
Maah Jeth bhala pritam
kiyon visare II thal tape sar bhar sadhan binyo kare II dhan binyo karedi gun
sare di gun sari prabh bhava II
Sublime is the month of Jeth. Why should I forget my beloved?
The earth burns like a furnace. The bride prays to her Lord. She sings His
praises by praying to Him she becomes pleasing to Him.
Asad bhala suraj gagan
tape II dharti dukh sahe sokhe agan bhakhe II mariye dhokhe bhi so kirat na haare II rath phire chhaiya teed
lave manjh bare II avgun badh chali dukh aage such tin saach samale II
The month of asad is good the sun is blazing in the sky. The
earth suffers sorrow and is parched and heated like furnace. The heat dries up
moisture and men die in anxiety even then the sun wearies not in his task. The
sun’s chariot moves on and the wife looks for shade and the grass hopper chirps
in the forest. She who departs tying the bundle of sins suffers hereafter but
she who remembers the true Lord comes to peace.

Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib – 10
Before we go to details of Bara Maha in ragas tukhari of Guru
Nanak Devji and rag majh of Guru Arjunji the changes effected by the changing
of seasons as noticed and recorded by Guru Arjunji according to the prevalent
division of the year into six seasons, a blick into his beautiful composition
Ruti documented in rag Ramkali on page 927 -928 is a must. In Guru Granth Sahib
the spiritual union with Lord the Almighty has been described as seeker (Sikh)
as beloved or wife and the Lord Himself as the Kant or husband. The separation
comes because of the ego that is manifested in human beings as riches, pride of
caste, and position in the society.
This separation or bichhoh from Lord is taken as the basis of
the description of changes in the seasons and how nature the creation of primal
Lord plays his role in bringing the changes in a seeker (Sikh) and he
ultimately starts on the path to seek his union with Lord. Since Guru Arjunji
keeps the magnitude of house of according to which all days, seasons and months
are auspicious. In the beginning of his composition he says: jassu gaveh wadbhagi ho kar kirpa bhagwant jiyoII rut
maah murat ghadi gun ucharat sobhwant jiyo II O fortunate ones sing the
praises of the Lord and His auspicious grace will be bestowed on you. Auspicious
is the season, the month, the moment and time when Lord utters his grace.
Traditionally the season starts with the basant ritu or
spring and the months are chet and vaisakh. The nature comes to life in these months.
But for the convenience of the showing of emotions that change according to
the season and how the transition in human nature takes place in his spiritual
quest to seek union with Lord we will start from the season of grishm ritu. Grikham rut att ghakhri jeth akhade ghaam
jiyo II prem bichhoh duhagani drisht na kari ram jiyo II The months of jeth
and haar of grishm or summer season are severely intense and hot. Man behaves
like a divorced woman who has been separated because of her pride and Lord
doesn’t see her or love her because of her attachment to the riches, ego and
pride. Without the Love of Lord she is like fish without water and dies in
agony.
Rut baras suhelia sawan
bhaadve anand jiyo II ghan unnav vuthhe jal thal pureya makrand jiyo II Prabh
pur riha sabni thhain har naam navnidhi ghar bhare II The pleasant rainy season of the month of
sawan and bhadon bestows bliss. The low clouds rain and fill the seas and land
with sweet honey water. The Lord is fully filling all the places with nine
treasures of His grace that each and every hearth and home is filled.
By seeing the nature’s bounty the man who has disgraced
himself and separated from the Lord has been awakened and he starts thinking of
Love of God.
Rut sarad aadambro assu
katke har piyas jiyo II khojanti darsan phirat kabuh miliye guuntaas jiyo II In the sarad season that precedes
winter the months of assu and katak the thirst or desire to meet the Lord has
awakened in me and I am preparing to meet him. Searching for His vision I wander
thinking when shall I see Him my Lord the treasure of all virtues.
Rut sisiyar seetal har
pragtey manghar poh jiyo II jalan bhujhi daras payeya binse Maya droh jiyo II In the cool moon months of maghar and
poh God has become manifest into me ( I feel His presence within me). Seeing
Him the burning desire to see His vision has become lessoned and the fraud of
illusions (Maya) has also ended.
Rut saras basant maah
chet vaisakh sukh maas jiyo II har jiyo naa miliya mauliya man tan saas jiyo II Delightful is the season of basant. The
months of chet and vaisakh are pleasant. Obtaining the venerable Lord as my
spouse my soul, body and life are blooming.

Guru Granth Sahib -- 9
In an earlier article it was mentioned that Guru Granth Sahib ji contain various forms and art of literature that spans over a period of 1000 years. There is another art of prose that is perhaps older than that and that is the description of a year according to the changes of weather which in Indian context is divided into six. How this division came into being is not known perhaps the short lived season of two months each and its smooth transition into next season is the reason behind this division. As the earlier man lived more closely to the nature his experience of nature’s bounty of each season was remarkable because his all life revolved around nature its impact on his feelings, moods was more evitable. Changes of each season created certain emotions and moods. The best way to express the emotions was singing and music. The earliest folklores contain description of season and its changes and prominent among these emotions are separation and union with the beloved. The seasons changing has been recorded as Bara Maha in which each month find its description but the year is divided into six seasons of two months each. In other words the season of two months transits into another change of season that leaves its impact on all living beings not only humans and on vegetation as well. This division of the year into six seasons is recorded as chaitra- vaisakh or Basant, jeth-haad or grisham, sawan- bhadron or barkha, assu-katak or sarad, maghar-poh or hemant, maagh-phagun as shishir or patjhar. The total changes that are effected by these short lived two month season are not only physical like in temperature and humidity of the air but movement of living being, growth of vegetation but in emotions and moods of human beings.
The early man has expressed his emotions in folklore and later it came into various forms of art, music and literature both contemporary and classic. The short lived nature of the season is so intense that poets who came to India with invaders could’t remain untouched from its impact of beauty and changing emotions and moods. All India based Persian writers have written about the barah maha. The bhaktas of 11th century onwards have given this weather and season change importance to unite with the Lord. This spiritual association of changes of season with meditation and simran has many expressions in Guru Granth Sahib ji. Both Guru Nanak and Guru Arjun have written explicitely on this matter and there are various verses by bhaktas as well. Guru Nanak has expressed his feelings in Raag Tukhari in Granth Sahib and Guru Arjunji has written in Raag Maajh.

Summer of 2014 in Punjab
Unfortunate and unpardonable – the unfortunate act of violence that took place at the Golden Temple in Amritsar after the completion of remembrance ceremony of martyrs of Operation Blue Star is indeed unpardonable. It only shows the desperation of marginalized and confused hard liners who want to come to lime light and press their agenda of violence. They shamelessly put the sanctity of Darbar sahib at stake; they are oblivious of Sikh cause and Sikh mission. By brandishing swords they have not only defied the rules and regulations of Tenth Master Guru Gobind Singh that sword is to be used only against tyrant and to fight for the rights of weak and victims of injustice but they scrupulously defied the honour that the sixth Master gave to the sword that it should remain in sheath while at Akal Takht. The building up of anger of the Sikh community against the government for its unpardonable denial of justice, compensation to the victims of 1984 violence and Sikh genocide can be understood but still the violence against own people to promote militant agenda in Darbar Sahib just because world media is present is definitely uncalled for. Each Sikh Guru has taught us to be humble but at the same time awakened us to be prepared to fight against injustice and tyranny and not against your own people. Basically these misguided youth need very patient transformation and right path to Sikhism. I only hope SGPC has learned a lesson and will do something in this matter. Taksali agenda is only harming cause of Sikh mission.

Summer of 2014 in Punjab
After reading a post on one of the social networking site
that glorified promotion of alcoholism by an ignorant father to teenagers of
13-14 year old I have come to the conclusion that alcoholism and drug addiction
is two way traffic. The hectic activity of Punjab Police and Punjab government
alone will not bring the change. As it is the efforts made by the Punjab
government are not enough because they are emphasizing on drug consumers and
small dealers to eradicate the problem. The first step to drugs is alcoholism
and that is rampant in Punjab. The parents particularly men think it is a manly
thing to drink alcohol and they don’t stop at that and never try to become role
model. The urge and greed to drink is shared publicly and boasted upon. In most
marriages that I have visited the hosts reserve tables for men and each guest
gets a bottle on his table and the guests greedily throw liquor inside as if
the tummies are big drums that can consume large quantities of liquor, chicken,
fried fish and mutton. These socially accepted norms actually astonish me
because most women folk are cool with this kind of behavior. The story is
repeated in each marriage and a very ugly drink culture has evolved and the
compulsion factor that we have to do the same has become a trend. The grown-
ups drink publicly and teenagers hide behind the bushes to drink. In the
bargain marriage party becomes a booze Party.
A joint effort of Police, public and administration was erected
to finish terrorism from Punjab and something to that nature has to come and
this time larger public participation will be required to change the scenario
in Punjab because the menace of drug addiction is more deadly than the
terrorism. It is ruining everybody.

Guru Harkishanji
The concept of ikk Nanak ikk jyot in Sikhism was actually
manifested with the spiritual succession of Guruship to a child the younger son
of Guru Har Rai the seventh Master who was just five year old when he was
bestowed with this responsibility. There is a unique possibility that Guru
Nanak Devji had this concept in mind that for the development of Sikism or his
concept of Ek Onkar, karta Purakh, Nirbhau, Nirvair, Akal Murat, Ajuni
Saibhang, Gur, Prasad continuity in the spread of his way of thinking was necessary
for the welfare of humanity that had fallen to the demoralized state in India.
From this concept the spiritual succession of Guruship may have evolved. The spiritual
succession is infact a spiritual transmission of soul. The concept is simple to
understand as a same soul will have the same way of thinking, perceiving ideas
and executing same kind of justice for the welfare of humanity. A same soul
will show the same kind of bravery in fighting with injustices, tyranny's and suppression of the masses by the mighty. From the history of Gurus one can understand how
they all fought for these ideals for the welfare oriented development of the
society. This concept of transmitting or succeeding souls is not unique to
Sikhism as it happens in all religions but what is unique is that all Gurus
have not transmitted to the next best who qualified in education or
understanding the tenets of Sikhism but only to those souls who had understood
the Almighty and his Hukam or Will. The transmigration of soul could take place
to a child. His charm and glow on his face could melt anybody’s ego. So he is
always remembered in the daily prayer of Sikhs as,” Guru Harkishan dhiyaiye jin
dhithe sab dukh jaye.”
On this occasion of his birth that we celebrate as Gurpurab I
wish all a very happy Gurpurab.

Summer of 2014 in Punjab
The month of June brings life in farmers in rural Punjab and they start ploughing fields to prepare for paddy because the govt. deadline is coming closer and they can hope to sow paddy. This year the hectic farm activities were missing because farmers were fearful about the electricity supply. Frequent cuts were making them worried and paddy sowing was delayed.I was wondering,"why the only lively-hood of farmers was being denied to them just because the Punjab government's failure to secure supply of electricity ?" Oblivious of the worries of farmers the Kheti-bari experts were crying hoarse on television channels to reduce the sowing of Basmati as markets are bleak for this variety.Such announcements go in favour of Artiyas and rice sheller owners who start spreading fear that this year Basmati will not get its price. And when basmati is harvested they can exploit farmers to maximum by buying at lowest rates. The debt ridden farmers have no alternative then to buck down before this artificially created market strategy. They have no holding powers so they sell at low rates under duress. This situation should make us all ashamed that we create such horrific situations for the poor farmers that he has to live under stress all the time. Governments lip service and free electricity can never change the actual bad situation of marginal farmers. All state governments in India need greater sensitivities to the issues of farmers.

Summer of 2014 in Punjab
The month of June brings another dreadful event to mind that
changed many equations in India. 39 years ago on June 25th 1975 a
state of emergency was imposed in India by none other than the elected Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi who was found guilty in election offence and
disqualified by Allahabad Court and banned to fight elections for six years. She
managed to get reprieve from a leftist judge Krishna Iyer of Supreme court.
Once in Power she showed her true colours, emergency was imposed, press was
gagged, and all other democratic institutions systematically demolished like
the sovereignty of police and judiciary. Laws were changed to suit the ruling
party. More than 100000 people were detained without trials. Civil services
were reduced to rubber stamp and all the power were usurped by her in other
words she became so authoritarian that even the opposition became timid and
later silence. Blank warrants were signed by the judges for arrests and
judgments were written under pressure. All the powers were transferred to
politicians and the new mould of democracy was made were the elected members
started usurping powers and they started dictating to police and civil servants.
The hangover still remains such were the demolition power of her authoritarian
rule. Why I am writing this? Because the younger generation needs to know that
a constant vigil is required to safeguard the institution of democracy and that
democracy should never be taken for granted and history should never be
forgotten. History is always molded to suit the rulers but there is truth that
comes out if we really look out.

The month of June not only starts getting hotter with furious winds that bring loads of fine dust inside homes even when doors and windows are closed but it brings the bitter memories for Sikhs and majority of them master them with élan. The shahidi Gurpurab of Guru Arjun Devji is celebrated by distributing sharbat on roads almost throughout the month of June. This way they remind the greatest ever martyrdom of fifth Master to future generations.June also brings the bitter memories of operation blue star and genocide of innocent Sikh pilgrims at Golden Temple in Amritsar by Indian Army. This year being the 30th anniversary an appeal to the world community was marred by the anti- Sikh doctrine people at a ceremony held to commemorate the martyrs at Golden Temple. This shameful act was to push their own selfish agenda. What pained most was the sanctity of Golden Temple was disturbed shamelessly.

After rolling out orders of CM to catch drug dealers in Punjab and partly transferring the powers back to Police a wave of police action was seen and all the politicians their cronies and relation could do nothing but wait till things cool down.A crackdown on low rung dealers only enraged many people in Punjab and everyone cried for action against mighty and powerful. A malfunctioning of democracy that came into existence after Indira Gandhi imposed emergency in India where power was transferred into the hands of politicians and they could interfere in police functioning and judiciary was never corrected.Though under duress the CM gave powers back to police to take action against all erring politicians and officials.I only hope Narendra Modi follows this trend and all over India the police can work with dignity and without the political interference. There is likelihood that police would feel less frustrated and its handling will become just and according to prescribed book of law.

Summer of 2014 in Punjab
After a good thrashing of Akalis and BJP in Punjab for neglecting and ignoring the needs of aam admi it was time to save face for Akalis. It was crucial for them to get ministerial birth of the rank of union cabinet minister. A ten day New Delhi camping resulted in a Union Cabinet birth with a reprimand to get things going against root cause problems that costed them many seats particularly loss of Arun Jaitely in Amritsar. The rejection of ruling party by people is a matter of shame. CM launched a massive drug addiction eradication programme. The question is," why in the first place the massive breakdown of government machinery took place?"
