Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib – 13
Guru Nanak says; Pokh
tukhar pare van trin sokhe ras sokhe II awat ki
nahin man tan vaseh mukhe II man tan raveh rahi jag jeevan gurshabdi rang mani
II
In the month of Poh the snow (Kora) falls and the sap of
forests and grass dries up. O lord why are you not coming? You are now abiding
in my soul, body and mouth. O God the Life of the World is permeating my mind
and soul. Through the Guru’s word (shabad) I am enjoying His love.
Maagh punit bhaiudh
teerath andar janeya II saajan sahaj mile gun gahe ank samaniya II pritam gun
anke sun prabh banke tudh bhava sar nava II
In the month of Maagh I become immaculate knowing that the
pilgrimages are within me. I have easily met my beloved enshrining His virtue
and merging His Being into me. Hear thou O my darling and Beauteous Lord thine
merits I have enshrined in my mind if it pleases thee I shall bathe in thy
tank.
Nanak Maagh maharas har
jup athsath teerath nahta II
Nanak says; in the month of Maagh by meditating the Supreme
Elixir is obtained that equals the sixty-eight bathing pilgrimages (that Hindus
perform to obtain the bliss of nirvana).
Phuagun man rehasi prem
subhaiya II andin rehus bhaiya aap
gavayiya II Man moh chukaiya ja tis bhaiya kar kirpa ghar aao II
In the month Phagun the soul of those to whom the Lords love
is pleasing is in bloom. She who effaces her, self conceit, night and day
abides in the spiritual bliss. When it pleases Him, efface I the worldly love
from my mind and the Lord merciful comes to my home.
In the end Guru Nanak ji do not forget to tell us that;
Nanak mel lai guru apne
ghar var paiya nari II 16II bedus maah ruti, tithi vaar bhale II ghadi murat pal
saache aiye sahaj mile II
Nanak the Guru has united me with the Lord and I the bride
have obtained my groom with the Guru’s grace in my very home. The two and ten
(twelve) months, the seasons, the lunar days, the hours, the minutes and
moments are all sublime when the True Lord comes and naturally meets me.
In other words there
is no importance placed on the auspiciousness of all these time figures and
that they are just poetry forms. That is the important feature of the house of
Nanak that doesn’t let you go stray in your belief to become superstitious even
when he is praising the Lord in one of the many ways he has shown us the path
to HIM.
