Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib - 19
The glory of Japuji Sahib : Guru Granth Sahib ji’s message is secular thinking, no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or social standing. Rituals, mantras, religious symbolism, pilgrimages and ceremonial acts of mercy, penance, austerities have no place in the messages. The principle line of thinking that gives us glimpses of messages that have been told in various ragas, shlokas by several Gurus, bhagatas are following:
1) God is the primal Lord and the ultimate truth. There is no other Truth than His existence ; Aad sacch jugaadh sacchuh II Hai bhi sacchuh Nanak hosi bhi sacchuh II
2) The purpose of life is to become truthful (sacchiar) and to become truthful one needs to follow the Will of God; hukam rajai cchalna Nanak likhiya naal II
3) To become truthful the veil of falsehood has to be lifted and the central theme of Japuji explains us this falsehood in which human beings are stuck up due to the prevailing religious practices that hinder our communion with Lord because we are not following His Will or Hukam. He explains us that we have a part of the Almighty in us that has to be invoked to mingle in His light as water mingles with water and remains water.
4) He mentions the existing socio- religious practices that leads to the multiplicity of Gods and Godesses by the Brahmin and then there are Naths and Jogis who go into trance and vow of silence to seek union with God and then there are Hatha yogis who try to increase the life span into four ages but all such practices are rejected by Guru Nanak. He even rejects the life style of all these so called religious movers and shakers because they are self centric and deviate from paying attention to One God concept.
5) God is Supreme
6) He is ineffable
7) His creation is infinite
8) He is All Pervading
9) He is Mainstay of the World and He is great and bountiful.
The mul mantra or invocation is technically not part of the japuji sahib but it explains the concept of God that is deciphered in Japuji sahib. Japuji sahib is not sung in to any raga but recited in the manner of meditation that is exhilarating, elevating to the mind and soul and invokes feeling of well being.
