Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Asa di waar  3
In Mul Mantra Guru Nanak has given many definitions to God and one of them is Nirbhau the literal meaning of which is without fear. Guru Nanak says; He is the only Being that has no fear but all His Creation like the sun, the moon, the earth, the fire , the wind, the ocean and the man moves under the grip of His fear. In the following stanza he explains this:
Bhay wich pawan vahe sadvau
Bhay wich chalehai lakh daryau
Bhay wich agan kadhe vaigar
Bhay wich dharti dabbi bhar
Bhay wic indu phire sir bhaar
Bhay wich raja dharma duaar
Bhay wich suraj bhay wich chandu
Koh crori chalat naa anant.
The fear of Almighty makes the wind to blow, the rivers to flow, fire to burn hot, earth to carry all the weight, the clouds to move head long ( rains to pour), Kings to follow the path of dharma, sun to shine and moon to spread light and for that they travel miles without an end.
God alone is the fearless Being, He is sovereign. Everything else moved under His discipline. Next in line of Guru Nanak is His formless Existence which he calls Nirankar in Mul Mantra. Nanak says; this Formless Being alone is fearless. Loads of Ramas came and ended in dust, there were stories of Krishna and recites of Vedas, many beggars who bend and turn and dance to many beats, the bazaars are full of pretenders who come and display all their exhibits of falsehood, there are Kings and queens O Nanak who wear earrings and necklaces worth lakhs on their bodies which will ultimately turn in to ashes. The divine knowledge is not sought by mere words. It is difficult to explain the Truth of His Being because it is hard like iron. It is His Grace alone that a recipient if obtains becomes exalted. All other means like pilgrimages, walking bare foot, offerings and many other instruments that man thinks can work to achieve are ruinous.
