Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib 22
The glory of Japuji Sahib;
God is ineffable means His greatness cannot be described. Kiv kar akha kiv salahi kiyo varni kiv jana II How to express, how to praise, how to describe and how to know (Thee O Lord)? Nanak! All are trying to describe you and one is wiser than the other. But The Master is great like His name and whatever He does, he knows only. There are nether worlds below the nether worlds and lacs of skies. The Hindu scriptures Vedas have tried to describe Him but are still trying and tired because nobody can fathom His greatness. Then there are Semitic scriptures like Torah, Quran and Anjil or Bible called Kateb in Guru Nanak’s times that claim there are eighteen thousand worlds but there is only one essence (that the Lord is limitless).
His greatness is so ineffable that Nanak says: Nanak wadda akhiye appe jane aap II salahi salah eti surat na payiya II nadia ate vahuh pave samund na janiye II In other words: O Nanak call Him great. He Himself knows His greatness. All those who praise Him they may never know His extent as rivers and rivulets they all ultimately fall into ocean but can never fathom its extent.
Limitless are His ways and limitless are His bounties. One cannot find any limits to His seeing and hearing. There is no limit of His creations. For knowing the vastness of His creation if one makes efforts He becomes more and more obscure.
O Lord your merits are priceless and your dealings are priceless, your treasures are priceless from which thousand take away but they remain priceless because your affection is priceless and your divine law is priceless. Your scales are priceless because your measurements for giving your affection and accepting the praises are priceless. Your benevolence is priceless and so is your order priceless. Beyond price and invaluable Lord cannot be expressed.
