Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Asa di waar 4
On page 465 of Guru Granth Sahib Guru
Nanak ji make the Nirbhau and Nirankar aspect of the Lord clearer in two
stanzas and shlokas. He says: When the merciful Master shows His benevolence
only then He is obtained. He is obtained when the self conceit is purged from
within. He says; the hours of the day are like milk-maids (Gopis) of the Krisna
and his herdsmen are like the four parts of the day. The wind, the water and
the fire are like ornaments, the sun and moon are like incarnations that He has
created to make earth His abode. Man exploits this earth and uses all its
wealth to create wealth and gets more and more entangled in all this but
without the knowledge of the divine all his plundering will not help and the
messengers of death will devour him. There are many Gurus who along with their disciples
play music and dance till they get their head and hair covered with dust,
people laugh at them and then go home. They do this to earn their daily bread
and sing of Krishna and gopis, of Sita and King Ram. Fearless and Formless is
the True Master who has created this whole world.
Guru Nanak says; everything spins
around in this world goes round and round like the oil press (Kolhu), the
spinning wheel (charkha), the potter’s wheel, the top (lattu) and the endless
whirl winds of the desert (Wavrola), the milk churner (madhani), the tumbling
of the birds till they get breathless. All the entanglements of the world make
a mortal like he is spinning on a stick. Nanak says; while pondering over Guru
he has come to the fact that only the merciful Master can ferry the mortals
across (Ocean or bhavsagar). We sing and dance around according to our deeds and
the ways He wants us to do. We grow yearnings for all this dance and merry
making then why not grow fear of Him that is love as well.
By reciting the Name of the Formless
Lord one doesn’t go to hell. Your body and soul belong to Him. You eat what He
gives you. Searching for anything else would be just waste of words. Then why
not do virtuous deeds and be called humble being. Death is inevitable and comes
in the form of old age whenever the measure of your breath is full.
