Shlok Second Guru
All those who have taken
the instructions from Guru (From Guru Nanak’s teachings) and have been taught
and put on right path remain absorbed in the praises of One True Lord.
What instructions can be
imparted to them who have taken instructions but have incarnated Guru Nanak? II
1 II
(This shlok of Guru Angad
Devji is a big blow to all those learned people who have not learnt the message
of Guru Nanak that the God is only One and He cannot be incarnated that means
He can never take any form, shape, colour and birth).
First Guru
He, whom He Himself causes
to understand, understands Him.
Whom the Lord Himself
gives knowledge, he comes to know everything.
The Preachers are regularly
preaching and sermons are being explained but long for money or wealth.
The Supreme commander has
created the entire creation and He Himself understands the mental outlook of
all.
Nanak, the Lord Himself
has uttered the Word and all doubts vanish when the devotee understands this
gift II 2 II
Pauri
Me, a jobless bard God has
employed to His service. In the beginning He asked me to sing His praises day
and night. Then the Master asked me, O bard come to my Court!
Then He clothed me with
robes of His true honour and eulogy. Since then True name has become my
ambrosial food.
They who follow the Guru’s
instructions eat this food to their full satisfaction.
By singing the Guru’s
hymns I the Bard, am spreading the word of God.
Nanak, by praising the
True Lord I have obtained the perfect Lord II 27 II
Note ; Vaar Maajh is
concluded with this Pauri.

(In this following shlok Guru Nanak has
described the life of Jogis who roam around the landscape of India even to date.
Their self respect is lost but they adhere to this life style because they do
not want to work for their living and keep depending on the earnings of others.
Their example is taken here to show the useless-ness of a being who are not
ready to work for their earning a living and losing self respect makes no
difference to them).
They shore their heads,
drink dirty water and beg for their living and eat even left overs.
They spread the garbage
and take in its odour and breathe it out from their mouth and are shy of water.
They have their heads
shorn like sheeps and their hands smeared with ashes.
They leave the daily
routine of their mother and father and leave them wailing loudly.
None will serve barley
pinnies( kind laddus made for the occasion)on leaves when they depart and none will light an earthen lamp for
them. Where are these people thrown after death?
All the sixty eight
pilgrimages do not grant them refuge and the Brahmins will not eat their food.
They are ever filthy and
do not bear any sacrificial frontal marks on their foreheads.
They huddle together in a
group but do not enter the Court (of the Lord).
The begging bowl on their
wastes and woolen clew in their hands they walk in a file.
They are not the disciples
of Gorakh nor are they devotees of Shiva not even Muslim judges or Mullahas.
They lose the benevolent
God’s graciousness and are disgraced to live a corrupt vagabond life.
Only the God can kill them
and restore their life, none other can protect them.
They cannot even give alms
in their life or perform ablutions. Only their shorn head catches even more
dust.
By churning ocean with Golden
Mountain as staff the jewels were procured and sixty eight pilgrimages were
created where people could celebrate festivals and sing hymns.
After ablutions the
Muslims say prayers and so does a Hindu says his prayers after ablution and the
wise ever bathes.
The dead and living are
both purified by pouring water on their heads.
Nanak says the shorn head
are like devils who never take to good advice.
When it rains there is
happiness everywhere because the key is that life spring from water.
The corn, the sugar cane
and cotton that comes from rain covers everything.
The rains grow grass and
cows graze and women churn the curds from their milk.
The clarified butter is
then used for havan and all other religious rites are performed in various
ceremonies.
The Guru is the ocean and
all his teachings are the river where by bathing wisdom is obtained.
Nanak says; if the shorn
heads (those who have lost self-respect) do not bathe in the word of Guru, they
only get hands full of dust on their shorn heads II 1 II
Second Guru
What can cold do to fire? And
how can night affect the sun? What effect can darkness have on the Moon? What
effect can a caste have on air and water? What shall earth do with Chattels
when it can produce everything on its own?
Nanak says the self
respect is preserved only if the Lord desires to preserve the honour of his
devotees II 2 II
Pauri
Oh! You Wondrous True Lord
I have sung your praises all the while because yours is the eternal Court and
all others are only coming and going.
All those who only ask for
the charity of your true Name are like you. With the True Name they get adorned
and their command becomes true.
By believing in you one receives
the true knowledge and strength to meditate on your Name.
By your grace one receives
a permanent mark of your Name that cannot be rubbed off or effaced.
You are a True giver O
Lord and bestow more and more. Nanak asks only for those gifts that are
pleasing to You II 26 II

A mortal is born in fear
and he abides fear in his mind and then dies of fear.

Without the fear of the

and he leaves with blackened face from this world II 2 II

Not only a revolutionary
Today on Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary I
would like to share a few words with all my friends. Bhagat Singh’s
inspirational life of a National Hero was so short lived that we are devoid of
his guidance that the youngster could get if he lived a little longer. In my
last visit to Amritsar I stumbled upon a book that contained notes that Bhagat
Singh made after reading books by famous authors, political articles and
magazines during his jail term in Lahore jail. When he left home to learn work
of publishing in Kanpur and learnt a lot from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi who was
not only a fierce type of journalist but a great patriot. Bhagat Singh also
learnt that the revolution is nothing like a romantic journey in one’s life but
one has to make a mature outlook on revolutionary ideas. For that one needs to
know the life of several revolutionary activists, their thinking pattern and
their dedication to achieve their goals. With this in mind he searched all the libraries
in Lahore and gave direction to develop his own path of revolutionary thinking
and what was necessary to bring change. He spent much of his time reading books
and his pockets use to be full of notes that he made every day. Before he
started organizing students and other youngsters to fight for freedom of India
he had consolidated his own political thinking and brought maturity in his
design to fight for the freedom of India. He was hanged at the young age of 23
but his short life was so inspiring that even today he is an idol for many
youngsters. This all was possible because by self learning from books had made
him mature to understand his goals.
Salute
to this great revolutionary on his birth anniversary.

Nanak says; asking for happiness
by removing pain from life is in vain. Both happiness and pain are given to
mortals from His Court. They are like two garments given to the mortals. It is
better to keep mum then asking only for happiness II 2 II

Lord, the Creator.

Installation of Universal Guru
On 14th September Sikh world is
celebrating the installation of Guru Granth Sahib in Harmandir Sahib Amritsar.
It is a celebration day not only for Sikhs but the whole of humanity. Enshrined
in this Epic Granth are teachings of revered Masters of Sikhs and 11 Bhagtas
who belonged to Bhakti movement much before Guru Nanak’s time. Inclusion of
their Bani is evidence that the world was going on a dark path where humanity
and humanitarian thinking had taken a back seat, religion and religious heads
had started misguiding and pushing people into darkness of ignorance,
superstitions, illiteracy and they were forced to live in subjugation of not
only religious heads but Kings and Emperors. Bhagtas started a movement to
fight for their rights to pray in temples and sing praises of One Almighty for
whom the whole humanity is equal, challenging the powers and announcing that
the division of the society is man made. All the efforts of those Bhagtas are
included in the Granth who collaborated the same view as Gurus that there is
only One True Lord and His truth is that for Him all humanity is equal and
there is love for all even when they are different in race. That the
differences been created by the Lord Himself for His own appeasement. The
physical differences are the play of that Creator so that mortals understand
His unlimited powers, His Infinite and eternal character.
In raag Mundawani Fifth Guru Ang (Page) 1429 has
elaborated the greatness of Guru Granth Sahib because its main content is
Shabad or Word that has come as Anahad Bani or untouched sound through
utterances of the Gurus. Its compilation that was presented by Guru Arjun Devji
the Fifth Master in a book form so that the Bani become eternal and the message
of the Almighty is recorded and documented as reference to guide humanity on
righteous path.
Anahad Bani means a sound that comes without
touch. To explain further a sound is usually created by friction of two
metallic or even non metallic materials. Anahad is a sound that is creation of
The Almighty that comes without friction. Gurbani is called Anahad Bani because
it came as enlightenment to the writers themselves. Guru Arjun Ji has
documented the greatness of Guru Granth sahib ji in Mundawani raag as follows:
Thaal wich tin vastu paiyo, sat santokh vicharo
II
Amrit naam thakhur ka paiyo, jis ka sabas
adharo II
Je ko khave je ko bhunche, tis ka hove udharo
II
Eh vast taji nahin jayi, nit nit rakh uri dhare
II
Tam sansar charan lagi tariye, sab Nanak brahm
pasaro II 1II GG ang 1429
Meaning: Three things – truth, contentment and
meditation are served in a platter. The Nectar Name of the Lord who is the
support of all is also put in there. If someone partakes this fare and if
someone relishes it, he is emancipated. This cannot be forsaken never ever so
keep it enshrined in your mind. All that spread is His Creation so at His Feet
you shall get the salvation and this dark world ocean is crossed. O Nanak,
everything is extension of the Lord.
The creation of human beings and all the three
worlds took a strange path where there was darkness of ignorance and religion
was created where God and His message were forgotten and rules and regulations
took precedent. Much bondage was created to divide humanity on basis of birth,
colour of the skin, food, geographic and economic monopolies, boundaries etc.
This all was done by people with vested interests and lust for domination,
power and exploitation. The ideal human character was absorbed by the desires
and if the desires are not fulfilled the doubt and fear were created and
solution to these were given by the learned people forgetting all the while
that there is one eternal Truth and that is the presence of Omniscient Lord.
His will was forgotten. The world needed emancipation and that is to reach that
status whose foundation was laid by the Creator Himself by placing a part of
Himself in every body. The basic desire of every human being is to reach that
ideal state where he has physical, material, psychic, intellectual and
spiritual achievements and inner peace. Achieving this entire he reaches realm
of harmony with himself, his near ones and the world around him. This is the
real principle of emancipation.
All the religious books were saying same things
in varied styles and languages but the interpretation of the religious
doctrines were overpowered by the religious heads for their own vested
interests and divisions in God’s will were created and humanity was divided.
Revelation of this truth came to Guru Nanak and
he started preaching the truth and making reconciliation between two major
religions of his time was his mission. He based his theory on Oneness of God
who is a Universal Entity and sees the entire creation with equality, love,
compassion and benevolence and not particular creed or race. All preaching of
Guru Nanak, that of Bhagats that were collected by him during his various
travels were documented and compilation of this work by adding the Banis of other
Gurus and his own were done by Guru Arjun Devji the fifth Master. The
compilation work took fifteen months and a monumental Granth was created with
unique features like respect for writers irrespective of their caste and
standing in the society, compilation featuring musical ragas of Indian music
and the original banis of Bhagtas and others were maintained in their own
languages thus a glimpse of languages and their structure for research is
available. The art of expression of phrases and contemporary living and social
customs were included for example the Barah Maha the seasons’ poetry and vairag
the pain of separation were given a new expression and all the social customs
to singing marriage songs, alahania etc were given new dimensions by associating
it with Almighty.
Wish everyone a very happy first
installation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

If a wayward (manmukh)

Nanak says if a man is introspective himself on his own only then he can become an assayer.
If a man can ascertain

On the way a man shall not

He shall try to find

A virtuous person who does

All through the night, the young Major sat there in the poorly lit ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the officer move away and rest awhile.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.
Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Major released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse.

Says Nanak; Guru is a tree
of contentment whose flowers are faith and fruits are Divine knowledge.
Watered by God’s love it
remains evergreen and its fruits ripen with virtuous deeds and meditation.
Self respect and honour
are obtained by relishing this bliss and this honour and self respect are

Guru is the tree of Gold
whose leaves are of coral, flowers are of jewels and rubies. The utterances of
Guru are emerald fruit of this golden tree and within the heart of his hearts
he beholds the Lord.
Says Nanak; only those
fortunate ones are blessed who have destiny written on their forehead and face.
Even the sixty eight
places of pilgrimages seek that the exalted Guru blesses the place with his
feet and they can worship him.
Cruelty, worldly love ,
avarice and wrath are four streams of fire. By falling in these streams the
mortal is burnt. The emancipation comes only by doing good deeds II 2 II
Pauri
While still living the
death is to be subdued otherwise there is only regret later.
Few understand that this
world is but falsehood. The love is not confessed for the True One but man runs
after worldly affairs. The fear of death is inevitable but the period of this
inauspicious death dangle over the head of the world.
When the Lord commands the
messengers of death strike a blow with their club on man’s head.
When the Lord bestows His
love it enshrines within the mortal’s mind.
When the measure of life

the food and dress becomes only hunger.
Without the True name the
false ones cannot enter His court.
Being attached to the
false avarice man loses the Mansion of the Lord.
The whole world is
deceived by the deceitful Mammon (Illusions) and that keeps the coming and
going in this world.
The fire of desires in the
body can be quenched only with God’s Name II 19 II

Janmashtami
and Teacher’s Day
Friends what a coincidence today that
Janmashtami and Teacher’s day fall together. Lord Krishna was the greatest
teacher ever at least I see him as Teacher. His great discourse Gita has become
an important documentation and religious scripture where he has taught the
righteousness and duties to Arjuna. Krishna plays the role of greatest teacher
Almighty and Arjuna is the mortal being receiving the knowledge and doing deeds
as per the Will of Almighty. The darkness of ignorance is dispersed and
emancipation process is established.
Happy Janamashtami and Teachers’ Day to all.

Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib
Vaar Maajh 16
Shlok Second Guru
During the eight watches
of the day and night O mortal, destroy eight things (five sins; lust, wrath,
avarice, worldly attachment and ego and three qualities namely rajas or
optimism, tapas or egoism and satik or pessimism) and in the ninth place take
control of your body.
Within the body there are
nine treasures of the unique Lord’s Name. The virtuous and profound persons
search those nine treasures.
Making the Guru a
spiritual guide the fortunate ones can sing the praises of the Lord O Nanak.
In the fourth watch of
early morning the person with exalted understanding develop an urge. They make
friendship with three streams of rivers while uttering the Name of the True
Lord.
The nectar (Amrit) is
distributed at such places and the fortunate ones obtain the gift of Name.
The body is assed like
gold and it gets imbued and the spiritual progress begins.
If the jeweler (God) casts
His merciful glance it does not go through the fire again.
The rest of the seven
watches it is good to speak the truth and keep the company of the learned.
The vices and virtues get
assessed and the capital of falsehood decreases.
The insincere ones are
kept aside and the immaculate are praised.
It is in vain to speak and
ask for boons O Nanak! All the pain and bliss is under the power of the Master
and it is up to Him to bless II 1 II
Second Guru
Air is Guru, the water is
the father, the earth is a great mother, day and night are two matrons in whose lap the
entire world plays (Air, water and earth together are origin of life and the
two matrons night and day are presence and absence of Sun that helps to nurse
the life).
The goodness and falsehood
will be judged only in a court where righteous justice is practised.
Accordingly their
respective deeds will be judged and some shall remain closer to the Lord and
others will be flung far away.
All those who contemplated
on the Name and worked hard to obtain it shall be emancipated.
Nanak, their faces become
bright and glowing and all those who keep company of these will get emancipated
too II 2 II
Pauri
The true Guru says the
love for Lord is the true food, this has satiated me and delighted me.
True are his citadels and
hamlets that come to reside in his own home (who has strived to obtain Lord in
his mind).
When the true Guru is pleased
he showers his affection on the mortals.
In the court of True Lord
one cannot enter with falsehood, by telling untruth the mansion is lost.
By hearing, realizing and
uttering the True Name, one is called to the mansion of the Lord II 18 II

Today’s Mukhvaak from Harmandir Sahib
Sorath Raag Third Guru dotuki Ang 638
Today’s mukhvaak has history behind it. When
the Sikhs were persecuted and majority lived in far flung villages and forests
to avoid their murder by Moguls and Afghani persecutors the important
Gurudwaras were taken over by Mahants and they were under the patronage of
colonial administration. Many Sikh intellectuals and devoted Sikhs wanted to
bring Gurudwaras under the controls of Sikhs so that any misappropriation of
funds that come from public could be stopped. Moreover these Mahants were
allowing astrology shops and begging within the premises of Harmandir Sahib. There
were many non Sikh rituals performed to make pockets fill by these Purohits.
The worst was caste system was being revived and member from lower caste were
not given Prasad and their Prasad was not accepted. There was a ravidasia
conference on 11th ,12th, and 13th October
1920 at Amritsar and they brought Prasad which was refused by the Mahant.
Though lot of fight was going on for the rehabilitation of Gurudwaras to Sikh
Sangat but this incident angered the Sikh Sangat and in a swift move the
control of Harmandir Sahib was taken by
Sikh Sangat and the movement was given new organizational character namely SGPC
which played important role in bringing all important Gurudwaras under the Sikh
Sangat control and caste based discrimination was removed forever from Harmandir
Sahib’s premises. Its doors were open to all races and creeds without
discrimination. After taking control of the Harmandir Sahib the first Vaak that
was read from Guru Granth Sahib was repeated today. This mukhvaak was so
fitting for the occasion and please read it once again.
