Guru Granth Sahib
Asa di waar 4
On page 465 of Guru Granth Sahib Guru
Nanak ji make the Nirbhau and Nirankar aspect of the Lord clearer in two
stanzas and shlokas. He says: When the merciful Master shows His benevolence
only then He is obtained. He is obtained when the self conceit is purged from
within. He says; the hours of the day are like milk-maids (Gopis) of the Krisna
and his herdsmen are like the four parts of the day. The wind, the water and
the fire are like ornaments, the sun and moon are like incarnations that He has
created to make earth His abode. Man exploits this earth and uses all its
wealth to create wealth and gets more and more entangled in all this but
without the knowledge of the divine all his plundering will not help and the
messengers of death will devour him. There are many Gurus who along with their disciples
play music and dance till they get their head and hair covered with dust,
people laugh at them and then go home. They do this to earn their daily bread
and sing of Krishna and gopis, of Sita and King Ram. Fearless and Formless is
the True Master who has created this whole world.
Guru Nanak says; everything spins
around in this world goes round and round like the oil press (Kolhu), the
spinning wheel (charkha), the potter’s wheel, the top (lattu) and the endless
whirl winds of the desert (Wavrola), the milk churner (madhani), the tumbling
of the birds till they get breathless. All the entanglements of the world make
a mortal like he is spinning on a stick. Nanak says; while pondering over Guru
he has come to the fact that only the merciful Master can ferry the mortals
across (Ocean or bhavsagar). We sing and dance around according to our deeds and
the ways He wants us to do. We grow yearnings for all this dance and merry
making then why not grow fear of Him that is love as well.
By reciting the Name of the Formless
Lord one doesn’t go to hell. Your body and soul belong to Him. You eat what He
gives you. Searching for anything else would be just waste of words. Then why
not do virtuous deeds and be called humble being. Death is inevitable and comes
in the form of old age whenever the measure of your breath is full.

Guru Granth Sahib
Asa di waar 3
In Mul Mantra Guru Nanak has given
many definitions to God and one of them is Nirbhau the literal meaning of which
is without fear. Guru Nanak says; He is the only Being that has no fear but all
His Creation like the sun, the moon, the earth, the fire , the wind, the ocean
and the man moves under the grip of His fear. In the following stanza he
explains this:
Bhay wich pawan vahe sadvau
Bhay wich chalehai lakh daryau
Bhay wich agan kadhe vaigar
Bhay wich dharti dabbi bhar
Bhay wic indu phire sir bhaar
Bhay wich raja dharma duaar
Bhay wich suraj bhay wich chandu
Koh crori chalat naa anant.
The fear of Almighty makes the wind
to blow, the rivers to flow, fire to burn hot, earth to carry all the weight,
the clouds to move head long ( rains to pour), Kings to follow the path of
dharma, sun to shine and moon to spread light and for that they travel miles
without an end.
God alone is the fearless Being, He
is sovereign. Everything else moved under His discipline. Next in line of Guru
Nanak is His formless Existence which he calls Nirankar in Mul Mantra. Nanak says;
this Formless Being alone is fearless. Loads of Ramas came and ended in dust,
there were stories of Krishna and recites of Vedas, many beggars who bend and
turn and dance to many beats, the bazaars are full of pretenders who come and
display all their exhibits of falsehood, there are Kings and queens O Nanak who
wear earrings and necklaces worth lakhs on their bodies which will ultimately
turn in to ashes. The divine knowledge is not sought by mere words. It is
difficult to explain the Truth of His Being because it is hard like iron. It is
His Grace alone that a recipient if obtains becomes exalted. All other means
like pilgrimages, walking bare foot, offerings and many other instruments that
man thinks can work to achieve are ruinous.

Guru Granth Sahib
Asa di waar 2
The glory of Lord (The God) and His
Creation that we have learned in Japuji Sahib has been again consolidated in
Asa di waar. Guru Nanak has confirmed that His Creation is not an illusion
instead it is a reality and a higher Truth. Creation and then taking care of
it, destroying and regeneration on this principle the universe is sustaining.
In the regeneration process the creation takes a new format and in this changed
format its existence is sustained. In mul mantra Guru Nanak has maintained that
God can never be destroyed so is His Creation. Birth and death are under His
Command (Hukam) and due to His Will a mortal comes and goes: jamun marna hukam hai bhane aave jaye II pg
472.
Nanak hukami likhiye lekh II jeha vekhe teha vekh II pg 466
Destiny of a mortal is written under
His Will and as a mortal sees Him so does He sees them. He has delightfully created
this universe as His Abode and we realize this Truth that He has created
continents and the solar system. His Truth, His command, His deliberations, His
orders, His true Grace are sign of His presence, even though lacs and millions
call Him true, His power and might is His Omnipresent existence but those who
are born and die are the false ones.
Great is His glory that His Name is
great, His justice is great, His throne is stable, His knowledge about our
utterances and His grace to give us without asking, O Nanak ! He is all in all
and cannot be narrated because what he does and why He does, He alone is aware
of that. Guru Nanak says: ikanna hukam
samai ikanna hukame kare vinas II ikanna bhane kadh laye ikanna maya wich niwas
II meaning; It is His pleasure that some He absorbs in Himself and others
he destroys. Some He withdraws from the illusion and others He leaves in such
illusions. This He does because He can recognize those who are Gurmukh or God
oriented and He reveals Himself to them with His enlightenment.
Guru Nanak wonders at the mysteries
of The Lord which he explains in the next stanza (Pauri) : Marvelous is your
word, your knowledge, your forms and colors, beings who roam about naked, the
wind and the water, the fire that plays and works wonders, the wonderful earth
with several mines that has several sources of production, your ideas of
merry making to which mortals get attached, you unite and then cause
separation, you cause hunger and then satiate it, your praises and your eulogy,
the great wilderness and a path is shown, your nearness and then going away.
Your wonderful way to be there and beholding your position that O Nanak! I keep
wondering upon your all wonderful ways and I am sure all those who recognize
and realize this are perfectly fortunate ones.

Guru Granth Sahib
Asa di waar; 1
In northern India waar a type of
poetry is usually sung to praise a knight who has achieved fame in the
battlefields to invoke Bir- ras a kind of mood or feeling and prepare people
for heroic deeds. Guru Nanak has written three Banis in bir ras or waar form
but all these banis are in three different ragas. We shall be explaining the
contents of Asa di Waar a poetry of bir ras that is sung in the early hours of
the morning from Gurudwaras in the world. Asa di waar is not to invoke bir- ras
but it is nothing less than that because it invokes awakening in people to
learn the contemporary social conditions where Guru Nanak has literally
challenged the rulers, religious heads and high caste people to show their
short comings. By singing this poetry Guru Nanak has invoked Bir ras in his self
and dared the mighty by a very sharp criticism. Even the Mogul rulers of his time couldn't touch him because his words were so full of truth and might have
ashamed many mighty people who were doing wrong to the humanity.
Asa di waar is also a true analysis of tenets
of Sikhism which are explained in poetry form and remind us every day of the righteousness
that we shall adopt to live a life of truthful person who believes in the
greatness of God and His Creation and acts accordingly. In these bani he has
stressed upon equality of the human race, equality to women, criticism of the
rituals suggested by Brahman because they take you away from the existence of
God and leave you entangled in the fake daily chores that are meaningless, he
has criticized the different dressing of the so called religious heads to keep
themselves above the masses. He has explained the meaningless acts like
pilgrimages, bathing at holy places and visiting fake Gurus which are suggested
to reach a union with the Almighty.
Asa di waar explains us why we should
fear God, wonder about His existence and His Creations, the most important of
all how we should aim in our life to become a perfect being that enlightens the
part of God present in every being and merges into the Perfect One.

Guru Granth Sahib 25
The glory of Japuji Sahib:
In japuji Sahib Guru Nanak has asked
questions like; How is Truth to be obtained? And how the falsehood or Kur (ignorance
and darkness) can be vanished? He answers these questions himself by explaining
and bringing us closer to the Truth that there is only Ond God and His Greatness,
His Creation cannot be measured by human beings and once we know this Truth
Guru Nanak makes us aware that He has also created His Will that works like an
unwritten law for the whole of Universe that moves under His Command. In the
final shloka Guruji remind us that:
Pawan Guru pani pita mata dharat mahat II diavas raat dui dai daiya khele
sagal jagat II changyaiya buryaiya vache dharma hadoor II karmi appo apni ken
ere ke dur II jinni naam dhiyaya gaye muskat ghaal II Nanak ke mukh ujjale keti
chhutti naal II
Air is Guru, water is father and
earth is great mother, the day and night are like matrons in whose lap the
whole world plays (our immediate atmosphere is created with air or oxygen and
the water element the combining of these both elements makes earth fertile and
livable and sun revolve around it creating day and night and day and night on
their basis the whole world comes to life and that is the great play created by
the Almighty). In this whole play the merits and demerits of a person will be
measured according to his deeds. With their actions some may come closer to the
Almighty and some may go farther. Those who meditate on His Name may get a
chance to be in His divine presence. After receiving His Grace their faces will
brighten and all those who keep the company of such enlightened souls may
benefit of His Grace.
The answer Guru Nanak has given in
Japuji Sahib is so simple, he first guides us to acquire the knowledge and
learn the truth about His Presence and then meditate on His Name to remove all
malice from your being and purge all the animosity from within you and become
ego free. Once humbled, getting His audience is not difficult and His Grace (Nadar)
is bestowed upon you.
Human nature is very forgetful and
distractive so reading this Bani is like an alarm clock in the ambrosial hours
of the morning that reminds us that we have to now wake up and carry on our duties
of the day.

Guru Granth Sahib 24
The glory of Japuji Sahib; God is the mainstay of the world
Guru Nanak says; In Puranas they say
earth is held by a bull but who is holding the bull? He rejects this theory and
says the mainstay of this world is God Himself and science has proved his
version that earth moves on its own axis.
Kar kar vekhe nadir nihal II tithe khand mandal varbhand II je ke kathe
ta ant naa ant II
God beholds the Creation which He has
created and renders them happy (By casting His merciful glance). In that realm
there are continents, worlds, solar system. If someone tries to describe them
there are no limits and bounds of them (this proves Guru Nanak’s concept of God
that he is trying to tell us in Mul Mantra or invocation).
Nanak says mystery of the world
cannot be solved by anyone and we can never know why there are universes and
laws of their functions. God beholds this world and He is the only one who can
contemplate on it.
Nanak kathna karda saar II Jatuh pahara dhiraj suniyar II ahirun mattt
ved hathiyar II bhau khala agan tap tao II Bhanda bhao amrit tit dhal II
Guru Nanak further says to know the
truth of God and His creation one must learn that it is like iron that cannot
be bent the way we want. We shall have patience like a Goldsmith who keeps
hammering the gold on his anvil very patiently till it gets in desired shape
and the rhythm of this hammering doesn’t disturb him and the temperature of his
furnace to mould the gold doesn’t bother him. One must learn to be like a
goldsmith; have patience like him, have knowledge hammered on you like his
anvil, the fear of God like his blow pipe with which he blows in his furnace,
meditate on His name like the temperature of the furnace, and make yourself
like a utensil in which nectar of God’s name can be filled.
This is the realm of truth about the
existence of God that Nanak has tried to explain us and guided us to the path
to achieve it. He names this realm of His truth as Sachuh Khand which is God’s
abode. His Will or Hukam prevails here and He constantly contemplates and has
ingrained His Will in everyone and we shall follow His discipline to merge in
His light. Those who are successful achieve His Grace and that is the
salvation.

His creation is infinite in other
words His creation is limitless in space or size, His care and affection, His
ways of creating the variety in environment, people of different races and
colours, temperaments, characters and habits.

In other words: The primal being,
pure sans beginning, indestructible who remain the same in all ages has His
seat in all the worlds and His store houses are in all the world and whatever
He has put in there was at once (contrary to the theory of evolution). Having
created His creation He is beholding it.
Jis ghar jor kar vekhe soi II Nanak uttam neecch na koi II rati ruti,
tith vaar pavan pani agni patal II tis wicch dharti thaap rakhi dharm saal II
He the creator has the power in His
hand to exercises and see it. He has created nights, seasons, lunar and week days,
the wind, water fire and nether worlds. In the midst of all this He created
earth as home for His meditation. Guru Nanak further says: He placed beings of
various types and colours, various and endless are their deeds and actions,
endless are their names. All these being will be judged by their deeds and
actions and those who reach the mark of acceptance by Him will be bestowed with
His grace and will carry the mark of His merci the others will be examined for
good or bad. This action of the Master is His duty for the realm of righteousness.
In the realm of knowledge He created
many Brahmas, many Krishnas and Shivas to fashion and forms the earth with
countless virtuous deeds and receives the orders and sermons. Countless moons,
Indras, suns and universes, countless countries, innumerable proficient
Gautamas, Yogis, innumerable gods and goddesses, many deities and demons and
silent sages, oceans and jewels, numberless mines, languages, and kings and
people with divine knowledge. There is no limit to His bounds. But in the domain
of knowledge the divine deliberations are the only ones that dazzle or glitter.

The glory of Japuji Sahib;
God is ineffable means His greatness cannot be described. Kiv kar akha kiv salahi kiyo varni kiv jana II How to express, how to praise, how to describe and how to know (Thee O Lord)? Nanak! All are trying to describe you and one is wiser than the other. But The Master is great like His name and whatever He does, he knows only. There are nether worlds below the nether worlds and lacs of skies. The Hindu scriptures Vedas have tried to describe Him but are still trying and tired because nobody can fathom His greatness. Then there are Semitic scriptures like Torah, Quran and Anjil or Bible called Kateb in Guru Nanak’s times that claim there are eighteen thousand worlds but there is only one essence (that the Lord is limitless).
His greatness is so ineffable that Nanak says: Nanak wadda akhiye appe jane aap II salahi salah eti surat na payiya II nadia ate vahuh pave samund na janiye II In other words: O Nanak call Him great. He Himself knows His greatness. All those who praise Him they may never know His extent as rivers and rivulets they all ultimately fall into ocean but can never fathom its extent.
Limitless are His ways and limitless are His bounties. One cannot find any limits to His seeing and hearing. There is no limit of His creations. For knowing the vastness of His creation if one makes efforts He becomes more and more obscure.
O Lord your merits are priceless and your dealings are priceless, your treasures are priceless from which thousand take away but they remain priceless because your affection is priceless and your divine law is priceless. Your scales are priceless because your measurements for giving your affection and accepting the praises are priceless. Your benevolence is priceless and so is your order priceless. Guru Granth Sahib 21
The glory of japuji Sahib;
God is Supreme – in the beginning stanzas of
Japuji Guru Nanak ji explain us the Supreme nature of God. He is the truth, He
was truth and He will ever be truth and from the beginning of ages His truth
has been maintained by Himself. Even if one ponders lacs of times His
conception are beyond human understanding so vast is His realm that we may
collect all the wealth, knowledge, we may keep the vows of silence and all
these material achievements will not go with us when it is time to depart it is
His preordained Will that is maintained. It is His Will that bodies are created
and souls are transmitted and greatness can be achieved. Though millions of
description are made, His praises, His magnificence and excellences, His
bounties and His power of Creation and then reducing to dust are sung, some say
that He gives life and then takes it away but He is a great Giver and He will
keep giving and man can get tired of taking from Him but He is the Supreme
Commander who will keep walking on His path. Then how do we achieve Him? People
ask for alms and He keeps bestowing, how should we chant His name, how can we see
the door to His realm? Nanak says; chant His name in the ambrosial hours of the
day and His benediction of life and clothing your soul that is human body and
its salvation will be bestowed. Know thus O Nanak that He is True One and He is
all by Himself and He is neither established nor created by anyone. They who
serve Him obtain the honour of His benediction, all the pain will be gone and
happiness can be taken home. Gurbani (reciting which one becomes Gurmukh- God
centric) is the divine Word, Lords knowledge and through Gurbani Lord is realized
that He is Supreme and all Pervading. He is the Guru,He is Brahma, Vishnu,
Shiva and Parvati. Guru has explained to me that I cannot narrate Him, I cannot

Guru Granth Sahib - 20
The glory of Japuji Sahib ;
In Guru Nanak’s time the practice of
religion was to visit temples and undertake pilgrimages to pay obeisance and
register your visits at these holy places, follow acts of mercy, charity to
under privileged, undertake penance and austerities, take holy dips on
auspicious days for merit in heaven and also inauspicious days to guard from
evil. Then there were Naths and Jogis, sarwaryias (grave worshippers) who had
sway over people’s psyche. For Guru Nanak both these paths were not acceptable
as they didn’t lead to a union with God instead commerce was traded in the name
of God. God has His own discipline, His own Will (Hukam). The Hindu belief in
trinity of Creator, Preserver and Destroyer in Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva is not
real and has no basis because they are creation of human imagination. God is
Himself Brahma, Vishnu, Sihva, Parvati and Lakshmi and he performs all the
functions of creation, preservation and destruction. He is all alone and all in
all and there is no separate entity. Similarly he denies the role of Naths and
Jogis who try to create miracles, take vow of silence, go in to trance and play
scores of tricks to show that they have established
contact with the Almighty and can take devotee to His presence. Then there are
Yogis who claim to overpower their senses and extend their life spans are all
in vain and empty show because the strings of affairs of this world, His own
creation are only in His hands. Guru Nanak names the Almighty with Brahma,
Vishnu, Shiva, Parvati, Lakshmi, Siddh, Buddh, nath and other myriads of Names
to illustrate the functions performed by Him that are otherwise assigned to
these sub Gods. He is the only Supreme Being, All pervading, Immanent, Bountiful.

Guru Granth Sahib - 19
The glory of Japuji Sahib : Guru Granth Sahib ji’s message is secular thinking, no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or social standing. Rituals, mantras, religious symbolism, pilgrimages and ceremonial acts of mercy, penance, austerities have no place in the messages. The principle line of thinking that gives us glimpses of messages that have been told in various ragas, shlokas by several Gurus, bhagatas are following:
1) God is the primal Lord and the ultimate truth. There is no other Truth than His existence ; Aad sacch jugaadh sacchuh II Hai bhi sacchuh Nanak hosi bhi sacchuh II
2) The purpose of life is to become truthful (sacchiar) and to become truthful one needs to follow the Will of God; hukam rajai cchalna Nanak likhiya naal II
3) To become truthful the veil of falsehood has to be lifted and the central theme of Japuji explains us this falsehood in which human beings are stuck up due to the prevailing religious practices that hinder our communion with Lord because we are not following His Will or Hukam. He explains us that we have a part of the Almighty in us that has to be invoked to mingle in His light as water mingles with water and remains water.
4) He mentions the existing socio- religious practices that leads to the multiplicity of Gods and Godesses by the Brahmin and then there are Naths and Jogis who go into trance and vow of silence to seek union with God and then there are Hatha yogis who try to increase the life span into four ages but all such practices are rejected by Guru Nanak. He even rejects the life style of all these so called religious movers and shakers because they are self centric and deviate from paying attention to One God concept.
5) God is Supreme
6) He is ineffable
7) His creation is infinite
8) He is All Pervading
9) He is Mainstay of the World and He is great and bountiful.
The mul mantra or invocation is technically not part of the japuji sahib but it explains the concept of God that is deciphered in Japuji sahib. Japuji sahib is not sung in to any raga but recited in the manner of meditation that is exhilarating, elevating to the mind and soul and invokes feeling of well being.

Guru Granth Sahib – 18
The glory of Japuji Sahib :
My father in law always recited first
five puari of japuji that he had learned from someone as he could not read and
write. The devotion and conviction with which he did that every morning was simply
fascinating. I once asked him whether he understood the meaning of what he is
reciting and his answer was simple like
his devotion to Gurbani, he said; ‘when you chant Gurbani loudly all those
spaces where its sound reaches becomes immaculate and holy.’ That was his
cosmic relation with the Almighty God and his confirmed belief in Gurbani. This
mechanized recitation of all banis without understanding their message is way
of life for many and they feel satisfied that they are following something divine.
The contentment that they have done their religious duty is keeping them happy.
The missing inquisitiveness and going in depth to understand the message doesn’t
bother simple people. It is only when we start learning and questioning that in
depth knowledge becomes requirement. In the beginning Guru Nanak ji put forward
his message by creating melodrama and playing pranks. He needed this message to
put forward by creating dramatic situation because even learned people are very
adamant and they simply don’t want reasoning and arguments. For example at
Haridwar where Pandas were offering water to Sun God in east and he started
offering in the west where in Punjab he had his fields. By doing something
unorthodox he attracted people to tell his message about the truthfulness of
One God. Japuji is considered to be a bani for meditation and many recite it
that way in the ambrosial hours of the morning. The message this bani gives us
the actual summary of Guru Granth Sahib ji. The mul mantra or invocation that
is beginning of Granth Sahib finds its explanation in the Japuji sahib. For
understanding Guru Granth Sahib ji it is
important to know the message depicted in Japuji Sahib.

Guru Granth Sahib 17
Bara maha Guru Arjun Devji ;
Guruji stress upon to strengthen personal
character of the beloved (wife – Sikh) who is on path to search of union with
Lord Husband.
Kaam krodh naa mohiye binse lobh suaan II sacche marag chaldiyan ustat
kare jahan II athsath teerath sagal pun jiy daya parwan II
Lust and wrath shall not seduce you
and the dog of greed shall be destroyed. The world praises those who walk along
the path of truth. If you take pity on the fellow human beings will be
acceptable in His presence than taking ablution baths at 68 pilgrimages and
giving alms.
If one attains this virtue God will
bestow his merciful grace.
Maagh sucche se kandhiyah jin pura guru meharwan II
In the month of maagh those become
pure whom the Perfect Guru has bestowed His merciful grace.
Phalgun nit salahiye jisno til naa tamaye II jin jin naam dhiyaiya tin ke

In phalgun ever praise the One who
has not an iota of malice. All those who have praised and meditated on His Name
have been blessed and their deeds rewarded.
Prem bhagat tin paiya bhikhiya naa jare II Kur gaye dubidha nassi puran sacchuh

All those obtain love and devotion
and burn not in the sins of their own that have crossed darkness of ignorance
and doubt and filled their minds with truthfulness.
Parbrahm prabhu sevde man andar ek dhare II
They serve the Supreme Lord Master
who have placed the Unique One in their heart.
True to the House of Nanak Guru Arjun
Devji warn from acquiring any superstitions about the auspiciousness of the
moment, day, seasons and months.
Maah divas murat bhale jis ko nadar kare II Nanak mange dars daan kirpa
kareh hare II
The months, days and moments are
auspicious for those on whom the Lord casts His merciful grace. Nanak asks for the
boon of your Sight O God ! shower your benediction on him.

Bara Maha Guru Arjun Devji
Katak karam kamavane dos na kahu jog II parmesar te bhuliya viyapan
sabhuh rog II vemukh hoye ram te lagan janam vijog II
In the month of katak you do the good
deeds and it is not good to blame others. By forgetting the Supreme Lord all
the ailments cling to the man. Those who do not believe in the presence of
Omnipresent Lord suffer the pains of separation in every birth.
Katak hove sadhu sang binsay sabhuh soch II
In the month of katak by keeping the
company of saints all the anxieties of mortals depart.
Manghar mahu sohandiya har pir sang baithadiya II tin ki sobha kiya gani
jieh sahib meladiya II
In the month of maghar beautiful are
those who sit in the company of the beloved Lord. How can their glory be
measured whom the Lord blends with himself.
Manghar prabhu aradhana bahud naa janamadiya II
Those who meditate on the name of the
Master in the month of maghar are not born again.
Pokh tukhar na viyape kanth milya har naahu II
In the month of Poh (the coldest
month) all those do not feel the cold whom God Husband hugs to His bosom.
Bihkhiya poh na sakai mil sadhu gun gaahu II jahu te upaji tehu mili
sachi preet samah II
In the company of saints sing the
praises of the Lord and no sin can touch you. Being absorbed in the love of the
True being the soul gets blended with what it has sprung from.
Poh suhanda sarab sukh jis bakhse veparvah II
Poh is beautiful and giver of all
peace to him whom the Carefree Lord grants pardon.
Maagh majanu sang sadhua dhuri kar isnaan II har ka naam dhiyaye sun
sabhna nu kar daan II janam karam mal uttare man te jai guman II
Wherever there is dust due to the
congregation of saints go there, deem it as a bath of ablution at holy places.
Listen and meditate on the name of the Supreme Lord. Once you absorb this
recitation of His Name give it as alms to others. Doing this all the filth of
evil actions that man has collected in several births will get washed away and
the ego gets vanished from your heart.

Bara maha Guru Arjun Devji:
Sawan sarsi kaamini charan kamal siyo piyar II man tan ratta sachhuh

In the month of sawan happy is that bride who has taken
refuse at the Lotus feet of the Lord. Her body and mind get drenched with the
colour of the Omnipotent True Lord and she feels His name is the only support
she has.
Bhikhiya rang kudaviya

The sinful pleasures are false and all that is apparent will
turn to ashes. Every drop of His Love is like nectar that one quaffs in the
company of the saints. The forests and meadows are refreshed with the love of
the Omnipotent, all pervading and Infinite Lord.
Har milne nu man lochda
karam milavan haar II jinni sakhiye prabh paiya houn tin ke saduh balihaar II
My heart yearns to meet Him and if His Grace be bestowed I
shall meet Him. I bow to all those friends who have obtained Him unto them.
Sawan tina suhagani jin

The month of sawan is delightful to those happy wives who are
bedecked with the garland of Name of all pervading God.
Bhadui bharam bhulaniya

In the month of bhadon she who cherishes love for another is
lost in doubt. All her lakhs of decorations to beautify her are futile.
Se bhadui narak naa

In the month of bhadon those who enshrine love for the Guru
the savior will not be consigned to the hell.
Asun prem umahada kiyon

In the month of assu the love for Him is overflowing from
within me. How shall go and meet Him? There is great thirst in my body and mind
for His sight O mother. Ask someone to come and enable me His sight.
Sant sahai prem ke hao

The saints will be my helpers in my search of love for Him
(The Almighty).

Gems of Gurbani
Guru Granth Sahib – 14
Guru Nanak’s belief that the Almighty, the Creator exists in
His own creation, in each and every living thing in nature, he keeps falling in
love with His Creation when he sees the way season’s change and bring new
version of nature and the expectations, the urge to have a union with this
Creator become intensive. In raag tukhari Bara maha Guru Nanak expresses his journey of
life and his union with Lord in the context of changes in nature throughout the
year whereas Guru Arjun Devji expresses the changes in nature and urges his
Sikh ( beloved wife) to keep company of saints to find union with the Almighty.
Saints or Sadhu sangat’s company is important because a good company can invoke
good nature in a person. The Bara maha written by Guru Arjun Devi ji in Raag
Maajh is recorded from page 133 onwards in Guru Granth Sahib.
Chet Govind aradhiye
hove anand ghanna II sant janah mil paiye rasna naam bhanna II
By remembering the Master of the Universe in the month of
chetra a great rejoicing emanates. By meeting the pious people and uttering His
Name with the tongue the Lord can be obtained.
Vaisakh dheeran kiyo
waadiya jinah prem vichhoh II har saajan purakh visar ke laggi maya dhroh II
In the month of baisakh those who are separated, how can they
have patience in this separation? They forget the beloved the Lord God and go
in pursuit of deceitful wealth.
Vaisakh suhave tan
lagge jan sant bhette har soiye II
The month of Vaisakh becomes beautiful if the company of
saints enable a union with the Lord.
Har jeth juranda loriye
jis agge sabhuh nivan II har sajjan davan lagiya kise naa deyi bann II
In the month of Jeth you ought to search for That Lord whom
everyone bows. No one keep the beloved in bondage who has taken the protection
of the Lord.
Har jeth rangeela tis
dhani jis ke bhaag mathann II
In the month of Jeth the playful Master shall meet those who
are chosen by Him.
Asad tapanda tis lagge
har naa nah jinna paas II
The month of Haar is hot and severe for those who do not have
the bliss of God’s name with them.
Asad suhanda tis lagge
jis man Har charan nivas.
The month of Haar is pleasant to those who take Abode (shelter)
in His feet.

Guru Granth Sahib – 13
Guru Nanak says; Pokh
tukhar pare van trin sokhe ras sokhe II awat ki
nahin man tan vaseh mukhe II man tan raveh rahi jag jeevan gurshabdi rang mani
II
In the month of Poh the snow (Kora) falls and the sap of
forests and grass dries up. O lord why are you not coming? You are now abiding
in my soul, body and mouth. O God the Life of the World is permeating my mind
and soul. Through the Guru’s word (shabad) I am enjoying His love.
Maagh punit bhaiudh
teerath andar janeya II saajan sahaj mile gun gahe ank samaniya II pritam gun
anke sun prabh banke tudh bhava sar nava II
In the month of Maagh I become immaculate knowing that the
pilgrimages are within me. I have easily met my beloved enshrining His virtue
and merging His Being into me. Hear thou O my darling and Beauteous Lord thine
merits I have enshrined in my mind if it pleases thee I shall bathe in thy
tank.
Nanak Maagh maharas har
jup athsath teerath nahta II
Nanak says; in the month of Maagh by meditating the Supreme
Elixir is obtained that equals the sixty-eight bathing pilgrimages (that Hindus
perform to obtain the bliss of nirvana).
Phuagun man rehasi prem
subhaiya II andin rehus bhaiya aap
gavayiya II Man moh chukaiya ja tis bhaiya kar kirpa ghar aao II
In the month Phagun the soul of those to whom the Lords love
is pleasing is in bloom. She who effaces her, self conceit, night and day
abides in the spiritual bliss. When it pleases Him, efface I the worldly love
from my mind and the Lord merciful comes to my home.
In the end Guru Nanak ji do not forget to tell us that;
Nanak mel lai guru apne
ghar var paiya nari II 16II bedus maah ruti, tithi vaar bhale II ghadi murat pal
saache aiye sahaj mile II
Nanak the Guru has united me with the Lord and I the bride
have obtained my groom with the Guru’s grace in my very home. The two and ten
(twelve) months, the seasons, the lunar days, the hours, the minutes and
moments are all sublime when the True Lord comes and naturally meets me.
In other words there
is no importance placed on the auspiciousness of all these time figures and
that they are just poetry forms. That is the important feature of the house of
Nanak that doesn’t let you go stray in your belief to become superstitious even
when he is praising the Lord in one of the many ways he has shown us the path
to HIM.
